By P. H. NICOL There is an old expression about third time lucky. This weekend it proves true for all music lovers. Larry Coryell has finally made it.

His field Is-Jazz, but he also goes into blues, rock and ballads. He is capable of doing anything on a guitar that was ever meant to be done, and can bring It off to near perfection. -nrfllfF nnnd Kinn 1L 19 IdlfclJ JMMW IIllg quote anything at length, but this one time has a justification worth mentioning. New York critics, who see so many of the great and are notorious for their scepticism, particularly where up-and-coming performers are concerned. Bearthis In mind as you read the following description of what Coryell is all about.

"Larry Coryell. young jass guitarist who, for the past few years, has been pioneering a path that leads to a genuine and profound fusion of rock styles and jazz styles Coryell Invented a style of guitar was. intricate and fascinating, with careful to the most subtle of details. "In one' case, he was bringing jazz to rock, in the other, rock to jazz, but always, Coryell avoids superficiality and concentrates in-order, structure and unity. He is.

I'll hist settle for a cere-' monial burning of my belli bottoms and water pipe and betake myself to a Mall' bench where I can lean on a cane and wistfully eye those winsome young I might even take to talking to myself. "Never trust anyone over; 30, is the rallying cry of the "Now" generation, uttered. I think, by one of their, many 38-year-old. prophets. That will be no great hardship on my part: I never did trust myself, especially on payday or with somebody else's liquor.

All the terrible finality that' has been attached ttf miss this opportunity to see one of the best musicians in North America, There are four excellent records now available locally that are well, worth your attention. first is the new Gordon Llghtfoot album' "SIT DOWN YOUNG STRANGER" which contains many of the songs he did in his recent concert. Lightfoot is, beyond doubt, the best or the Canadian composers and has a great many who will enjoy this album as much as any of the discs. It -does, contain a few surprises that I'm sure you j-will find most enjoyable. There are not many Phil bchs fans in the world, a fact which always amazed me, but his latest record, "PHIL OCHS "GREATEST HITS" might win him a few more.

Ochs'who has always lived under the shadow of Bob Dylan, changes his style a little bit in this disc, but he still retains- the ability to get to the heart of political social problems with an impish sarcasm that Dylan could never achieve. It is his best since the "Pleasures of the Harbour" album. Closer to home BRUCE COCKBURN'S- new and first LP, 'True North" features all own music. The best songs are "Going to the Country" and 'Thoughts on a Rainy Afternoon." Record rarely put much money into first attempts so that if it fails, their losses are cut, but this record is a welcome exception. is technically good, and the songs? instant love! Jhose who used to frequent the old Opus, on the Metcalfe location, may remember a slightly built jazz guitarist JESSE WINCHESTER.

Jess, who works out of Montreal and New York, is a fine musician along the style of Lenny Breau and others. It's a shot in the dark for manybuyers but I'm confident it will find' the- musical mark for anyone" who takes the trouble. Think your a folk singer? Just like playing guitar? Why not try the hoots at -Wasteland on Sunday nights or Le Hibou on Monday nights. They would both be glad to see you. 1.

In every major city in the United States, critics have respond- in much the same way. -Coryell is probably known here through his records on the Vanguard label. But it is always better to see the man in concert, for only then can you appreciate the dynamic visual and musical electricity he generates No since Voc Watson has Le Hibou presented an act with such a universal appeal to young and old alike, with-" such a challenge to both professional, and beginning guitar buffs, with such a range, ojhr. musical1 tastes and excels, lence.
