M. Ami cf the geological survey staff and made enquiries regarding the so-oalled deep sea fauna which he was reported have discovered on Porter's Island in the underlying rock formation. The doctor stated thst Porter's Island ai made up of two geographical formations, tne one a rsry recent and tbe other a rery old formation. Tbe older one was found tbe rook beds underlying tbe drift or newer formation. It consisted of black bituminous shales which oontain "quite a percentage of petroleum or rock oil in their com position.

Thsy belong to the Ctice formation which directly overlies the limestone beds of the Trenton from which most of the building stone used in Ottawa is got. Amongst tha" fossil remains found were a number of examples of a rery rare sponge just recently described and hitherto new to science. There are also many other interesting fossil remains amongst which are large shells of orthocer-atites, graphtolitea and triiobites, which are oftimes replaced by aulphuret of iron, which makes them appear gold or bright brass colored. R. Petrie was opened on Monday and they expect to do a large business this season. They hare commenced using the Babceck test and will pay for milk eooerding to its valne. The farmers consider this the fairest system, as under tbe old system of paying, poor milk brought as much as good. The principal topio of conversation oa the streets just now is tbe Conservative meeting to be held here on the 7th inst.

Many had began to think that the party were dead it would now appear that they 'hare only bees resting. Sir A. P. Caron, Hon. John Heggert, and Dr.

Montague are announced to apeak and this will no doubt cause a very large meeting as tbe farmers are about through with their spring'a work. There ere many candidates spoken of Mr. 6 Hortublee, of Hurtubise, appears te be a strong favorite as candidate for the commons in the eastern part of the oountt. He would no doubt make a strong run. For tbe local we hear the name of John Tylter.G.
