Liane Vane and Maura McCabe were the guests of honor at the Denim and Diamonds Luncheon, a special afternoon affair hosted May 19 by the Fort Bliss Officers, Civilians and Spouses Association.

Vane is the wife of outgoing Fort Bliss commander Gen. Michael Vane. McCabe is the wife of Brig. Gen. Rick McCabe.

Club members thanked both women for their dedication to the organization, Fort Bliss and the El Paso community. Vane also helped the organization install and welcome its new board members. Fans of the long-running "Viva El Paso!" will have the chance to see the musical revue once again this summer. But this time, it won't be in McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre, which is closed for renovations.

Instead, the show will be staged in the Abraham Chavez Theatre. Being fairly new to the area, I've only heard stories about this El Paso staple, which will be in its 28th year. The production has survived controversies, including the abrupt resignations of artistic director Hector Serrano and executive director David Mills in 2002 (the two had been with the production since its inception) and new directors changing the format of the show and then changing it back. "Viva El Paso!" tells the story of El Paso, from prehistoric times through the cultures of Native Americans, the Spanish, the mestizo and the cowboy. The story is told through dance and song.

Productions are presented by the El Paso Association of the Performing Arts. Tentative dates for this year's show are July 29-31 and Aug. 5-7. Ticket prices and information numbers are not yet available. The success of the show in a different venue remains to be seen.

Many El Pasoans enjoy "Viva!" for the magnificent canyon as well as the show. So, now that it will be staged indoors, will it be successful? We'll be curious to find out. I'm so interested in this production because I love learning about history. The history of this area is especially rich, so I'd like to see the adaptation on stage. "Viva El Paso!" has a long history in the city, though its attendance has been flagging in recent years.

It would be a shame not to support such a positive cultural event. Support of the arts is vital in any community. It's also important to remember that everything suffers ups and downs; nothing is perfect. The message and lesson behind "Viva" is a good one. We all should know a thing or two about El Paso's history- This will be a fun way to get a history lesson while also supporting a production that has survived more than 20 years.
