Fat and happy with no competition in sight, the Emmys refuses to do much about its shortcomings: overabundant nominations, apples-and-oranges categories, a selecting process that appears to have no rhyme or reason. Oscars may garner attention for its winners, but Emmys are nothing more than bragging rights and maybe, a bump in salary on the next contract. Most intriguing, then, about the proceeding.s beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday on Channel 7-KVIA (cable Channel 6) is how Bryant Gumbel, the usually up-tight newsman, will fare as host.

Like delivering milk. Enter Gilberto Chavez, the only milkman in El Paso, a throwback to a time when families left their doors open at night, when television sets were all black-and-white, when computers were fantasies relegated to science fiction shows such as "Captain Video." Chavez works for Lane's Dairy, and has been delivering milk since 1964.

"I've been doing this so long it's become like a habit," Chavez said. "I'll never get tired of it. I don't get tired of eating. Why should I get tired of this? It's the same thing." "They don't call to complain that he's late," said Imelda de Anda, the office manager for the dairy. "They call because they're concerned. They want to make sure he's OK." Customers often ask the milkman into their homes for a cup of coffee, but he generally refuses their invitations. "If I do, I'll be late on my other deliveries," he said, throwing up his hands. The dairy is almost 80 years old, an industry that was launched not because of a dream, but because of a broken-down truck.

"It's kind of a funny story," said Chris Lane, the plant manager for the dairy. "My Granddad was headed from Missouri to California, and his truck broke down in Las Cruces. The guy who stopped to help him was on his way to El Paso, so they pulled the truck here. My Granddad ended up buying a cow and starting the dairy here." From one cow, the dairy has expanded to 1,200, and it has grown so much that the family moved the farm from Central El Paso to an area near Clint, where the business now boasts 640 acres. "We used to be about five to 10 miles outside the city limits," Lane said.

"Then we became the center of El Paso. We just got surrounded, and we had to move." But the Central El Paso location at 310 N.
