PAGE EIGHT BLYTHEVILLE (ARK.) COURIER NEWS TUESDAY, MARCH 29, M5. r4 New-Season Knits Tell Own Story Novelty Sparks Growing Line; Cotton Active Knitwear fashions have come long way since the days when the term meant a classic sweater or a knitted dress! For spring of 1955, knits tell a fashion story all their own. The most exciting part of the story is the invasion of cotton into the knit field. The cotton knit T- shirts are the gayest, most .imaginative wardrobe-sparklers ever! The Italian influence is much in evidence, bringing us T-shirts that are exaggerated in length, almost covering shorts for that popular leggy look. They are shown, too, with a cowl neckline that can be worn as a hood, a smart-looking style that's particularly popular with sports car enthusiasts. These potton T-shirts feature inspired styling in the choice of bold, color-bright stripes and the variety of necklines — Paris-favored high square neckline and the Bateau being the favorites. Hip-length jackets and costume cardigans of big, bulky cotton knits are wonderful go-over-every thing toppers. The styling of these jackets feature heavy rib turtle-neck collars, new dropped shoulders, and a variety of weaves. Also appearing on the fashion scene are dresses of cotton knit, skirt and top coordinates, cotton knit shorts, and slim-fitting calf length pants. Knit dresses and costumes of wool are being "rediscovered" by fashion-wise women. This is due largely to the smart and casual styling and the versatility of knits. Lightweight wool chenilles and boucles are shown in one-piece slim frocks and flare-skirted styles for daytime; many with companion jackets. New for after-five wear arc the knitted sleeveless sheaths with scoop neckline, often with Jeweled trims. Two-piece Knit suits are styled with a new ease and are shown with either a fitted waistline or the boxy jacket. Sweaters .for spring '55 have a new look, too, and have become an important part of the costume, instead of just "extras." Waist-length Shaker knits or long- line cardigans team with skirts, Bermuda shorts, and pants for casual wear. One sweater Is shown lined to match the blouse worn with it. 'Vest-Length' Jackets For Men Cause Stir A revolutionary short silhouette in jackets appears in men's wear this spring! From California, comes a new, new look inspired perhaps by a Spanish grandee's costume or by the trim-look of a Venetian gondolier's. Highlighted for either informal wear or for formal occasions, depending upon the fabric in which it is executed, style excitement of the newer jacket lies in it* tape- red-to-the-walst lines. The Jacket, which is constructed like a conventional suit coat at the shoulder line, tapers to the waist with a vest-like ending. The "vest-look" is further accented by narrow lapels that roll to a one-button closure. In some formal wear, lapels are eliminated, and the cardigan styling is enhanced by stitched detailing.
