Abuse by unwed moms up, report TORONTO (CP) The Ontario secretary for social development says she is disturbed by the number of unwed mothers in the.province who are keeping their children rather than giving them up for adoption. Margaret Birch told a news conference that 88 per cent of unwed mothers in 1977 kept their children, compared with less than one-third of unwed mothers in the late 1960s.

Ministry figured show that 6,511 children were adopted in 1966, compared with 5,077 children in 1977. Birch said she does not think a young unwed girl is able to look after a child. Often, a young mother will keep her child for a short time but later finds the pressure too great and places the child with a children's aid society, she said. By then, the child may be abused or. may be suffering from emotional problems, Birch said.

Earlier, the ministry of community and sy cial services released a report which said that an increase in the number of abused and neglected babies are the result of unwed teen-age mothers not being prepared emotionally or financially to care for their children. The report on the 63 children and youth institutions in Ontario, including 11 maternity homes, showed a dramatic increase in the last 10 years in the number of unwed mothers 16 years and younger entering maternity homes. The number of 15-year-old girls who had children has risen by 76 per cent between 1976 and 1978, the report said. Best Wishes Only. Sunbathing helps relieve kidney ills BOSTON (UPI) Sunbathing provides more relief from the severe itching often associated with chronic kidney disease than the ointments usually prescribed for skin irritation, a team of Boston researchers found. Of the patients suffering from uremic pruritus who were exposed to varying doses of ultraviolet rays, the study found 84 per cent recorded a decrease in skin irritation after six to eight treatments. "Scientists have suspected for a long time that sunlight gives some relief for but this is the first study to prove it," said Dr. Barbara Gilchrest, chief investigator for the study published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Participants in the study; conducted at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital, reported relief lasting 10 months on the average. The finding could be significant for 85 per cent of the 36,000 Americans requiring hemodialysis who suffer from uncomfortable itching. lind baking sheet, making a seven inch diameter circle or spoon the meringue into a springform pan. Serves 6. mm" by Sarji Ion Choosing jewelry for office wear: Try not to clank Dear Sam: I've never seen anything in your column about jewelry for the office. Are there any rules about what is in or not in for office wear? I have a lovely gold charm bracelet I wear every day.

One of my co-workers informed me that it shouldn't be worn in the office. What do you think? Jewelry Nut Dear Jewelry Nut: Your co-worker is probably trying to tell you that the clanking of your charms is driving her nuts. Save the charm bracelet and all other bracelets that bang for after work. Jewelry for office wear should be tailored and simple. Elegant gold or silver chains are always in good taste.

A plain watch goes well with the tailored clothes recommended by fashion experts for office wear. Turned down promotion Dear Sam: I just offered a very capable woman a promotion and she turned it down flat. Why? She wondered out loud if she could handle the job and then after she though about it, she turned it down. I then offered the job to the next in line for it (a male) and he grabbed it after first insisting on $2,000 more than I offered him. How do you figure it? The woman was much better qualified.

A Reader Dear Reader: The woman was lacking self-confidence, she knew she was good at what she was doing but couldn't see herself in the new role. Part of the problem is that until very recently there were few role models for women to look up to, so many women had no concept of taking the risk required to move upwards and perhaps fall. Encourage her to develop more self-con-, fidence so that she'll accept the next promo tion. Advice to the Wnrkinn Wnmnn Warn applicant of errands Dear Sam: I have an opening for a secretary and am in process of putting anad in the paper. Should I avoid the question of getting coffee in the interview? My last secretary always got coffee for me three times day.

Sometimes if she was busy, I got my The whole set-up worked very nicely but my last secretary was an older woman who wasn't woman's lib. Male Who Needs Help Dear Male: Don't pull any nasty surprises on your future secretary. Make out a complete job description clearly outlining the duties expected of your secretary and, yes, include the coffee and fetching your laundry if you require her to do that. Any secretary who doesn't want to perform those duties will then be able to refuse the job in the interview. She works too fast Dear Sam: Why do my supervisors become upset when I complete work quickly and accurately? I am a 33-year-old executive secretary who has been working steadily for the past 12 years.

I did finish high school or secretarial college although I attended both. I do not in any way qualify to become a supervisor. I am always punctual. I am reliable and get along with everyone, even my supervisors who are not aware of my sensitivity to their reactions. Whenever I work, it seems as though I complete it so fast that I am left with nothing to do.

I look around for other work, but my supervisors pull some dirty tricks on me and are sometimes outwardly antagonistic. They put a whole lot of unnecessary and challenging work on my desk without any instructions. I finish It off and then they become upset again. Their attitude makes me rather te'nse. Confused Dear Confused: You have left me confused too.

The mark of any good employee is to complete work quickly and accurately. Although you have confidence In your work, you seem hesitant about approaching your supervisors to find out why they are upset with you. I suggest a meeting with your supervisor to discuss your work. Ask for a Job assessment. If you think you'll have trouble doing this perhaps a little assertiveness training at your local community college would help..
