There isn't a thrill left in some of these hard-boiled youngsters who attend the Trans-Lux programs every week. They know to a nicety just how far any character can go, short of actual murder, and the gorier the plot the better pleased they are. James Ellison and Tom Conway portray half-brothers who loved the beautiful Jessica and quarreled.

Edith Barrett is their mother, widow of a missionary, who takes up with the voodoo rites to aid the natives, and then uses them for her own ends to work disaster on the girl who has broken up her sons' friendship. To tell the truth, it is fairly difficult to make much sense to the proceedings, and the characters themselves move through the picture with a lack of animation which must be laid to the direction. Frank Albertson is the hero of "The Silent Witness," a picture in which a courageous dog turns out to be the avenger of crime. M. L.
