Maribei Villalva Dallas show to feature El Pasoans' art, book It was last summer when the book "Desert Echo: Women Illuminate the Sacred" first saw the light of day. Its pages highlight the work of 15 El Paso artists and one poet. On April 26, the women involved in the major project will travel to the Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future in Dallas for an opening of an exhibit displaying their work and promoting their book.

It was the museum that published the book, and, since its release, all of the proceeds from the book have gone to benefit the museum. El Pasoans will have the opportunity to travel to Dallas to support the artists. Poet Jacquelyn Spier has been working with a travel agency to put together a tour package. The $365 package includes round-trip air fare and a three-night stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Northpark. On the second day, travelers will visit the Dallas Museum of Art and the Meadows Museum.

That night, everyone will attend the exhibit's opening reception at the Women's Museum. Spier stressed that anyone interested should contact her or the travel agency by Monday. A $100 deposit is required. Beginning today, a televi-' sion crew from a Dallas-Fort Worth public-access channel will be in town to film a documentary on the artists, poet and the making of the book. The crew will be here through Tuesday.

Spier said the crew wants to capture the landscape of the region, which was the inspiration for much of the art in the book. The documentary will air in the Dallas area before the exhibit opening, but there is no word yet on whether it will air in El Paso. Once in Dallas, the artists will go to Dallas-area classrooms to give workshops and discuss the book. "We want to show them what a community can do together," Spier said. At the exhibit, each artist will have two works on display, along with the poems by Spier that accompany them.

The El Paso artists included in the book are Susan Amstater, Marta Arat, Helen Armstrong, Louise Baratt, Carolyn Bunch, Cheryl Derrick, Connie Di II-. man, Susan Klahr, Joan Kuykendall, Jean McGee, Julie Ford Oliver, Hilda Rosenfeld, Joan Shepack, Carolyn Singh and Lyuba Titovets.
