director of turchases and supplies for the North Atlantic area of the American Red Cross, died today at Mountain side Hospital after a heart attack. The area embraces Delaware, New Jersey, New York and New It was created from the Red Cross Eastern area and Hobbs was named to the post in May. Hobbs previously had been assistant general manager of Hiram Ricker Son, director of the Poland Spring House at Poland Spring. Me. A native of Manchester, N.

Hobbs attended Newburyport, High School, Dean Academy and University of Detroit where he played football. During the first World War Hobbs was cited several times for bravery while serving overseas with Battery 51st Brigade, 26th CYankee) Divi sion. Battery, known as the Man Chester Battery, was founded by Edwin H. Hobbs, grandfather of Hobbs. Hobbs won the Croix de Guerre and the Order of the Purple Heart.

He was gassed twice. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lucile Gove Hobbs, and a daughter. Millard K. Shaler NEW YORK, Dec.

15 (AP) The Belgian American Educational Foun dation, announced today the death Dec. 11 of Millard K. Shaler, 62, managing director of the Belgian Mining Concern Forminiere, in Cape Town, Union of South Africa. A native of Ellsworth, and a graduate of the University of Kansas, Shaler served with the United States Geological Survey and the Guggenheim Exploration Company of New York before becoming a mining engineer with the Societe Internationale Forestiere et Miniere du Congo, the so-called Forminiere of diamond fame Brussels. He made several explorations and surveys in the Belgian Congo.

In September, 1914, he was the first delegate sent out from Brussels to inform the outside world of the food shortage threatening the city. Herbert Hoover appointed him secretary of the American Commission for Relief in Belgium and he served with the commission in London from 1914 to 1919. Shaler was a vice president of the Belgium American Educational Foundation and of the Foundation Uni-versitaire of Brussels. He is survived by a wife. Mrs.

Downing was the second eldest of 12 children. When he was 17, the family emigrated to the United States, leaving him in the care of a relative. Fr. Downing was assigned first to St. Joseph's Church, Newport, R.

and later to St. Mary's Church, Taunton. In 1907 he was appointed pastor of St. James Church, New Bedford. He was made pastor of St.

Francis Xavier Church in September. 1913. As pastor of the Hyannis church and the Sacred Heart Church at Yarmouthport, Fr. Downing became well known to nationally prominent persons who spent Summers on Cape Cod. When he observed the golden jubilee of his priesthood in 1938, he was honored by many state officials and church leaders.

He leaves two brothers, Rev. John F. Downing, and H. Downing, and a sister, Miss Katherine Downing, all of Provi dence, R. Margaret G.
