There were moments when she deeply stirred last evening's audience, and tumultuous applause rewarded her after the fall of the final curtain. Whether or not the two roles will win for her like popular approval, can be predicted with much less confidence. The present dramatization was made by Helen Jerome, an English writer who has earned distinction for her dramatization of famous novels, notably of "Pride and Prejudice," which is soon to be seen here. In adapting the lengthy "Jane Eyre" novel to the stage she has shown excellent skill in selection and arrangement of incidents and revelation of character. She tells her story so clearly and straightforwardly that familiarity with the book is not needed for its enjoyment. She has wisely refrained from attempting to remake the old fashioned sentimental melodrama into anything in the nature of a modern romantic drama.

"Jane Eyre" is too happily dated in the past to warrant bringing it up to date. The play skips over the first 100 pages of the novel which describe so graphically the pathetic childhood of the pitiful orphan and the privations she endured in the charity school. It begins with Jane's appearance at Thorfteld Hall and her first meeting with Mr Rochester, by whom she had been engaged as governess for his illegitimate daughter. From then on the important episodes of the novel are presented with effective fidelity. There are three acts, divided in eight short scenes, six in the living room at Thorfield, and two at the Moor House where Jane had fled after the tragic interruption of her marriage to Rochester.

Perhaps soma of the melodramatic touches, as those of the mysterious maniac who causes so much anguish, are a trifle hectic, but for the most part the play is kept on a highly sentimental level and is always of entertaining, often gripping interest. It has been recorded that when the play was first staged it painfully shocked the severely moral. Just why it is now difficult to understand. True, Jane did very frankly confess her love, but she restrained all demonstrations of physical ardor with a firmness that was Puritanical rather than Victorian. Jane has been brought from the pages of unreality to the stage with all possible realism and sympathetic appeal.

You may not always believe in the actuality of the elfish, etherial creature, but you won't deny that she is fascinating. The hard externals of the character of Rochester have been slightly softened; he is For reservations phone ask for Mr. HAncock 2000 and Allman Enjoy the convenience and luxury eep-ing right in the hotef. The last remembered presentation of the play in Boston was by Eugenia Blair in 1897. Last evening, to the cordially ex pressed approbation of a brilliant audience, Katharine Hepburn, an actress of distinctly modern type and of glamorous fame in the movies, brought back to stage prominence the famous novelist's vividly drawn characterization of the etherial and strangely fascinating plain little governess who suffered so intensely before winning the reward that was her due. It may be said with confidence that Miss Hepburn has found in Jane Eyre a role that is singularly in harmony with her personality and histronic equipment, one that is almost if not quite as well suited i AMUSEMENTS NOW ON STAGE! i 4 ARaaMaaRpBWWMalaaWaRBsslaMa'aaMWaMWBMBpTjTiTjwawi NATICK HOTEL HANGER jsa GALA NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY a SPECIAL DE LUXE DINNER MrWilMiHJiT a .1 4) $950 tO $K00 including tax and rated according 0 Am 9 to the location you desire. not quite the masterful ogre who so thrilled Jane with amorous terror, but he would be regarded as "hard-boiled" even in these days. The dramatist has quoted most of the dialogue verbatim from the novel, and there was no doubt that last evening's audience listened to it with gleeful enjoyment.
