The route will include Hawley, Summer, Bedford and Washington sts. Festivities begin at 8:30, at which time the doors will open and Tommy Tuttle's Trumpeteis will toot pooty i. tunes just to make shopping a little easier. Unkle Eph and his "gang" will hang out on the first floor balcony, where they will hold open house throughout the day, to welcome their many friends. i Contrary to popular belief, Unkle Eph is not a fictitious character, but is in reality Rev.

Harry M. Eastman, UNCLE EPH AT RAYMOND'S on a previous visit, shown with some of his mugginsviue Gang." minister of the Congregational Church of Slatersville, R. a church which was established 104 years ago. Mr. Eastman first became connect ed with the store over 20 years ago as a result of some interesting let ters which accompanied mail orders he sent into Raymond s.

1 4 1 1 Xn III ffyrr 1 Mr. Frank I. DtJrr, president of Raymond's at that time, persuaded Mr. Eastman to write a weekly let- ter to appear with the Raymond ad each Sunday. Mr.

Eastman's inimitable style won him many friends and fol-i lowers throughout New England, and his homespun philosophy came 5 to be a Yankee watchword. Thus was born Unkle Eph, and as such he has been known to the general public ever since. The doings of Unkle Eph and Ant Mary have inspired many ous people to create various interesting items pertaining to the background of these lovable New England characters. Besides several busts and plaques i of Eph himself, the store contains such trophies as a hand wood-carv. ing of Unkle Eph's ox-team, made by Frank Burnham of Milford, N.

H. as well as the replica of an old Maine sawmill (that will actu- ally operate)- constructed by a down-Mainer who had come all the way to Boston just to get in on the big doings on Unkle Eph Day. Tomorrow's papers will carry huge ads which have long since become synonymous with these famous Raymond events. People will come from far and wide, flocking to the Ole Fule Stoar. To many, it has become an ANT MARY'S SHOE DEPARTMENT, newly located in Raymond's Easy Basement, provides larger selling space and is more accessible.

Dowe, 44, soldiers relief commis- sioner of Lawrence, went on trial in Superior Court here today before Judge Frederick W. Fosdick and a jury on charges of accepting a gratuity of $80 and of conspiring to obtain money from the city of Law- rence unlawfully.

Asst. Atty, Gen. Frank G. Volpe, in his opening to the jury, said the ''game was worked this way: A soliders' relief recipient, needing shoes, for example, would go to Dowe's office. Dowe would give the recipient a slip and send him to the department store of Simon Sandler in Essex Lawrence.

The recipient would get the pair of shoes. Then Sandler, said Volpe, would send to Dowe a bill for twice the price of the shoes and uowe would approve the bill. And Dawe, said Volpe. would go to Sandler once a month to "get his cut" Before the trial of Dowe began, Sandler, 48, pleaded guilty to con-" spiring with Dowe and to giving him $80 gratuity. Volpe said that Sandler would testify for the prosecution.

Around 1935, Volpe said he would show, Dowe told Sandler that the profit was not enough, and instructed him to jump the prices more. Volpe said he would show that ince 1932 Sandler's store had re's ceived $12,600 worth of business from the Soldiers' Relief Depart-i merit, while 10 other stores in Law-' rence which aim sold shoes received 1 only $338 worth of business.
