17 VAUGHN MONROE PREMIERE TONIGHT ON WHP HARRISBURG TELEGRAPH, Harrisburg, Pa., sAl October 12, 1W Ellery Queen Resumes Mystery Show Every Wednesday, Riierv Queen, radio's oldest and most prominent sleuth, has resumed his tjhenomenal standing radio murders over at 7.30: Ellery is a veteran mystery writer as well as a competent radio script writer. His was one of the first mystery shows that offered audience participa tion and for that reason enjoyed a top listening rating from its in ception. Ellery is assisted by his able secretary, Nikki Porter, his father, mythical head of the Homicide De partment and Sgt. Veile. Sgt. Veile is perhaps the only man in the world who made a career out or crime and never solved a murder. This week on Wednesday night (7.30.) John Carradine, long, slim lead ing heavy of the screen, currently on Broadway in the historical drama. "The Duchess of Malfi," will put his deductive powers to the test as armchair detective lor Ellery Queen in "The Adventure of the Woman Who Died Several Times." There's a motely cast in the gen tleman sleuth's mystery two White Russians, a literary critic, the richest young man in America and Michele Morel, a woman who dies over and over again, and always lives to tell the tale. Pretty Nikki Porter, secretary assistant to the master detective, puts her head close to Ellery's and the two fit together all the pieces of the puzzle, except one. Then Michele dies once too often and the riddle is solved. Berlin, Rathbone, Hildegarde Guests Basil Rathbone, currently itar - ring in the new Broadway play "Obsession"; Irving Berlin, famed composer whose life story is told In the forthcoming movie. "Blue Skies"; Tito Guizar, popular Mexican singer, and Dave Apol - lon, virtuoso of the mandolin, are ringside guests in "The Campbell Room Starring Hildegarde" on the Columbia network Sunday, October 13 (WHP, 9 - 9.30 p. m.). This array of talent for the second broadcast of the new series on CBS promises to provide Hildegarde listeners with as gay a half - hour of comedy, repartee and song as marked the premiere last Sunday night. Paul Baron's orchestra provides the musical background for Hildegarde's songs. Resistance Eddie Bracken weakens readily under the spell of Connie Monahan (Ann Rutherford) on "The Eddie Bracken Show," CBS' new Sunday comedy series. For that matter, he also weakens in the ominous presence of Connie's father, who takes a dark view of Eddie. Lilting Lyrics Most embarrassing moment in the career of Harriet Hilliard came during a guest appearance on Bing Crosby's show several years ago. Just as the star of "Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" was set to launch into a song, a gentle breeze wafted across the stage, picked the lyrics from her hand and carried them 20 feet away. "You should have seen that Crosby sprint!" smiles Harriet. With more than 15 years' ex perience, Trout is one or. radio s most capable and best - known news men. His long career has been marked by coolness under strain and for his objective ap proach. He is familiar to millions of listeners because of his many radio achievements, such as his work on D - Day, during which he went to the microphone 35 times in 24 hours, his covering of Pres ident Roosevelt's death and his war - reporting record. Trout was born in Wake County, North Carolina, on October 15, 1908. and in his more than 15 years on the air, he has broadcast from many countries, interviewed thousands of people; he has re ported irom the depths of a strike' bound coal mine and from tne center of blitzed London yet, he has never missed a cue. "The Tenth Clue" Next Sam Spade Mystery on WHP "The Tenth Clue" will be the mystery solved by Dashiell Ham - mett's favorite sleuth on "The Adventures of Sam Spade," on Sunday, October 13, at 8 p. m., over WHP. Howard Duff is star red in the part of Sam Spade. Murderers have traditionally sought to commit the perfect crime by leaving no clues. They are nearly always caught by overlooking one insignificant clue. In "The Tenth Clue," Sam Spade is confronted by a case In which the criminal seeks to commit the perfect crime by purposely leaving nine clues that will divert any possible suspicion from himself. Lieutenant Dundy, of the homicide squad, is disgusted when Spade proves the falsity of the clues the police officer, has so gleefully gathered. Sam, however, knows the key to the murder lies in the false clues. In a startling piece of deduction, he assembles the nine false clues in such a way that they form a tenth clue that points unerringly to the culprit.
