After landing by accident in a New York stock company, the burly folk singer had small parts in several Broadway musical comedies. His big chance came when the Theatre Guild signed him to sing in "Sing Out, Sweet Land." Hollywood called him soon afterward to appear in his first motion picture, "Smoky." As natural and unaffected as ever, Ives prefers his beloved houseboat to a Hollywood mansion and once specified as a condition for living on land, "a house with a swimming pool large enough for my houseboat.
