NEWS, SATURDAY, wnmwwnwiumii iiiimiw imwuimuwii winnwww ninwiMMWiniiiirwiiwi wwjwniwriiiiwiiiimmiiMWiiwiiwwMMiM -a wee Santa Season Opens on Streets By JOAN SHEPARD Santa Danny was one of the first of the Volunteers of America Santa Claus squad at his post in Rockefeller Center yesterday after the organization kicked off its 78th annual Christmas drive at Times Square at 10 a.m. Veterans such as Danny went directly to their posts after the Santa Clauses paraded in Times Square. But the new men went back to the organization's Santa headquarters at the America Bowery Tabernacle, 65 E. Houston St.

This is Danny's 10th season at the important Rockefeller Center location. Six feet tall, 290 pounds full, Danny rings his bell loudly and steadily, says "Thank you" after each donation and talks to each child who wants a consultation. Kids yell to him from cars and he readily poses for pictures with his young visitors. Doesn't Take a Nip Can Santa take a nip when the temperature dips "Oh, no. When it gets cold I wear heavy clothes tinder my suit.

Nothing drives kids away like the smell of liquor on the breath," ays Danny. The Volunteers of America, formed in 1896 by Ballington and Maude Booth, maintains homes for men, halfway houses for the mentally disturbed, residences for working women and homes for the aged. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, the organization provides a turkey dinner for the needy. Some of the Santas come from the organization's rehabilitation programs, but others are men who want a change of pace such as the Jewish Santa who is a Good Humor man the rest of the year. "We get requests from community groups and chambers of commerce but we can't fill the demand," said Col.

Walter G. Nash, the organization's national finance secretary. "Our Santas are the most photographed." The Salvation Army also put its kettles on the streets yesterday. It hoped that this year no prankster will try to repeat last year's swiping of the Army's kettle on 34th St. Museum's Annual Display Of Creche Figures The Metropolitan Museum of Art will open its annual display of 180 creche figures and tree ornaments on Dec.

4, it was announced yesterday. The exhibition, in its ninth year, will remain on display through Jan. 13. The 18th century figures, with pliable bodies of wire and twine and with heads molded by noted Italian sculptors, were originally commissioned by the wealthy families of Naples who competed among themselves to produce the most beautiful displays. The collection was doated to the museum at 80th St.

and Fifth Ave. by Mrs. Loretta Hines. The museum will also mount a 15th century Austrian creche with life-size figures of the virgin and child at the Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park, for display from Dec. 11 through Jan.
