IOC High Point Enterprise, Sunday, October 3, 1976 Mounties Weave By Spiders MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) Bill McKenzie kicked a 45-yard field goal with just five seconds remaining Saturday afternoon to pull West Virginia's lethargic Mountaineers to a 9-6 college football victory over Richmond's underdog Spiders. The game seemed destined for a 6-6 standoff after Richmond's Johnny Jones kicked two second-half field goals to rally the Spiders to a tie. But with 1:42 to go, West The Mountaineers lost one Virginia defender Johnny golden opportunity late in the first quarter when fullback Walter Easley fumbled on the Richmond one-foot line with the ball being recovered by Richmond's Dave Haynie. Richmond, 1-3, could never generate any serious offen- Schell picked off a Larry Shaw pass and returned it to the Richmond 42 set up McKenzie's game-winning kick.

On a crucial third-down- andten play at the Richmond 42, West Virginia quarterback Dan Kendra hooked up with tailback David Riley on a 15-yard completion to the Spiders' 27 and, three plays later, McKenzie kicked his game-winning field goal The 2-2 Mountaineers dominated the game from all statistical aspects but threw away nearly every scoring opportunity with their own mistakes. The Mountaineers gave up four fumbles and unable to find his receivers all afternoon, had four passes intercepted. West Virginia, which had lost its last two games after defeating Villanova, got on the Scoreboard first when they first got their hands on the ball.
