She isn't a star any more, but she makes other girls stars. She is one of the few women of the stage who have stepped down from stardom and stepped up to an equally interesting job. Miss Zorina, who plays Angel in the show, is considered one of the most colorful of the young women now in the theatre. She was wearing a new green hat for Easter. It was made of green net and was quite the most amazing hat at the party.

Yivicnne to Play Siren Dennis King, Zorina's co-star, was present and wearing a new polka-dotted tie, which he said his valet made him buy for Easter. Walter Slezak came in full of excitement He wanted to know what was the feminine equivalent for "dean." Mr. Wiman solemnly told him it was "came," and so Mr. Slezak thanked him, and declared that a certain pretty girl was the "dame" of the girls in the Vivienne fcegal made a late en trance, looking very pretty with her tailored suit, her red curls and her piquant hat. She was all agog because Tuesday, opening night for I Married an Angel," is her birth day.

"I'm a bad girl in this show," she said with a relish. And Larry Hart who wrote the show, along with Dick Rogers, declared he had been trying to make Vivienne play bad niris for years. "She's been miscast all her life," said Larry- "Produc ers have been thinking of her as an ingenue, because she looks like r.e But her personality is definitely siren." Mr. Wiman tried to make the Globe reporter believe that Miss Zorina had grown wings for the show Only time it has ever hap pened in theatrical history," said Dwight. But he admitted, after severe questioning, that her wings are clipped on.

She is supposed to be a real angel, who becomes the bride of Dennis King when the handsome young man maintains that he won't marry any one but an angel. So he gets an angel and then all sorts of amusing complications ensue. Dick Rodgers says that the best song in the play is "I Married an Angel." And as Dick's songs have a way of being sung and played all over the world, he probably knows what he is talking about. mother, daughter and son, has been submerged by the financial depression and creditors are collecting toll from available household effects. Mother unexpectedly returns from a Mediterranean cruise, made on borrowed money.

She is gav and garrulous, chock full of optimism and not to be downed. We next meet the Thomases in their Greenwich Village kitchenette apartment presided over by the family butler who continues on without salary, on the contrary, advancing now and then a timely loan. Daughter has rejected the proposals of a millionaire because she is in with a man too poor to marry her; so she gets a job mod-elm? sports clothes. Brother couidn't get a job so he joined the Communists and got himself in jail. The action of the play speeds up materially witli the appearance of half a dozen amusingly eccentric and irresponsible individuals, and there are gay goings on for an hour or more.

In the end Mother's optimism wins out. Sbe gets a big commission for selling the novel of an unknown German, comes into possession of a $30,000 rug which she did r.ot know her late husband had bought and paid for; turns down the matrimonial proposals of the rng merchant and accepts those cf the judge before whom she had been arraigned that morning for non-payment of grocery bills. The stellar role of the all-pervasive Mother Thomas was portrayed with bubbling exuberance by Catherine Doucet, a pleasantly remembered actress and screen personality who was last -here in "As Husbands Go." She was warmly welcomed and after the performance there were repealed curtain recalls for herself and associates. The players generally made the most of their opportunities, notably Edward Fielding as the Judge. Stiano Braggiotti as the rug merchant, Edgar Stehli as the loyal butler.

Kathtrme Deane as the daughter. Barry Sullivan and Philip Ober as the rival lovers. Montgomery Clift as the weakling brother, and Fran-cesca Lenni as the attractive feminine Communist. The engagement at the Plymouth of "Eye on the Sparrow will end next Saturday night. The star of the past is Lina Abarbanell, and the star of the present is Vera Zorina, who appeared in "The Goldwyn Folkes" on the screen and is now making her bow to the American public as a stapr star in the new Rodgers and Hart musical comedy. Miss Abarbanell. who thrilled Bostonians when she played the leading roles in "Madame Sherry," "The Merry Widow" and "Flora Bella," is chief assistant to Mr. Wiman. And it was she who taught the lovely Vera Zorina (whose real name is Brcgitta Hartwig) how to speak English.

The two of them were the most interesting figures at the party held by Mr. Wiman at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel yesterday afternoon to celebrate his sixti "Boston trycut." This is the sixth show. Mr. Wiman, one of the most successful producers in America, has brought to Boston for a tryout before the New York- opening. And he has had tremendous success each time.

The other five were the second and third "Little Shows." "Gay Divorcee." wcth Fred Astaire, "On Your Toes." with Ray Bolger, and "Babes in Arms," with Mitzi Green. Wiman Likes Working Here Mr. Wiman. who is handsomer than his stars and so attractive that people think he must be from the movies, declared that Boston is his favorite "tryout town." "The theatrical district is compactyou haven't far to walk from your hotel; the hotels are the finest in the country and the city is pleasant and clean." said Mr. Wiman.

"Personally, I feel that I can work hardest here and in a much happier atmosphere than in any other city in the United States. And it is a city where one can relax as well as work." Mr. Wiman confided that his present assistant. Miss Abarbanell, who took over the job of teaching the Norwegian-born Miss Zorina to speak English, was his first star. As a young producer Mr.

Wiman put on "Sparkline Burgundy" and the tiny, clever little star was Lina. Neighbor Promise cf a "breathing spell the local theatrical depression came into evidence Saturday right with the presentation of the first of the four plays due here succession. The nw comedy, entitled "Eye on the Sparrow." is possibly of timely interest for it is concerned in a more or less cynically farcical way with the popular stunt of trying to beat the depression by spendthrift optimism. The title of the play implys that so long as there is a benevolent power above keeping an eye on even a sparrow, there is no need for any of us worrying much. If is understood that the author of "The Eye on the Sparrow," Maxwell Selser, has served the theatre both as actor and ss stage manager but that this is his first play to be honored with a professional production.

That there is evidence of inexperience and sometimes of tedious dullness in the structure and development cf the play, probably few in the cordially disposed opening night audience would be inclined to deny. There are some clever basic thoughts in the plot, an occasional note of truth and sincerity, some amusingly contrived situations and not a few bits of dialogue that deserve the laughter they receive; but most of the characterizations are too txitely fictional to awake sympathetic interest. The scene is laid in New York city cf the present time. The curtain rises on the wreck of a once palatial residence. The Thomas family, consisting of widowed DIXIE Dainty Dancing Star Jackie Cooper, star of "Boy of the Bert Wheeler, singing and dancing half of the comedy team of Wheeler and Woolsey, and Dixie Dunbar, pretty little dancer of stage and screen, are the three headliners coming to the Keith-Memorial Theatre this week, beginning Thursday.

On the screen is the new 20th Century-Fox comedy, "Battle of Broadway," in which Victor Mc-Laglen, Brian Donlevy and Louise Hovick play the leading roles. "Jackie Cooper" started his career in his kindergarten days as a member of Our Gang comedies. He later starred in "Skippy." "The Champ," "Peck's Ead Boy," "The Devil Is a Sissy" and "Tough Guy." His present act reveals him as an expert singer, dancer, drummer and comedian. Bert Wheeler, star of "Rio Rita" and other plays and pictures, presents a comedy act, while Dixie Dunbar is assisted by Tommy Wonder of Hollywood in a lively dance BULOFF DUE HERE TONIGHT IN "THE MAN FROM CAIRO" "The Man From Cairo" opens tonight at the Wilbur Theatre, bringing back to Boston the actor Jnseph Euloff, who endeared himself to audiences earlier in the season by his characterization of the revolutionary General in "To Quito and Back, featured with Buloff is Helen Chandler, brilliant actress of the stage and screen, and Viola Roache.
