A number of very interesting "transients" visited Chilliwack last week. Their names were not registered at any of our hotels, but a number of our young people who note their presence, and were struck with their clever and stylish appearance have been enquiring about them and would like to know their names, whence they came and whither they were bound. But so far no one has been able to give any satisfactory information concerning them. We refer to a number of beautiful birds which were seen around the town for a couple of days and then disappeared. Those we have constantly with us are familiar to all observers ot bird lite, but these were strangers to most of us.

They made their presence known in the early morning with a new and beautiful note among the chorus of larks, thrushes, robins, wrens, and later in the day were to be observed among the trees of the neighborhood. They are described as being smaller in size than the robin, with golden throat, dark brown wings, ruddy head, with well defined crest. If any of our older readers can give the name of these birds, they will certainly confer a favor upon a number of our young people who are interested in the birds. It has often been remarked that the song birds of British Columbia are chiefly noticable by their absence, and indeed that birds of any kind are very few in number and variety. This is un doubtedly true of certain parts of the Province, and one may go for hours or davs through the fir and pine forests without observing any sign of bird life.

Consequently there are wide reigons where the song of birds is unknown and scarce any sound disturbs the vast silence of the woods. But on the other hand the fact remains that both on the Coast and iu the Interior wherever there are open meadow lands, these are found to be well stocked with bird life. And moreover in the districts where the clearing of the land and the cultivation of the soil has progressed to any extent, wild bird life has greatly increased. In this respect Chilliwack is remarkably rich, and a splendid opportunity is offered for the development in our young people of the perceptive faculties and the habit of observation. There is nothing better calculated to develop the finer sensibilities of a boy or girl than the cultivation of an intelligent interest nature.

Unfortunately the variety of wild flowers found in the district is not very great, but, while these are lacking, the birds compensate to a great extent. A true knowledge of bird life does not necessitate anv killing or robbing of nests but rather results from a careful observation of the birds and their habits. hether or not it is from the influence of the local Game Pro tection Association we cannot say, yet the fact remains that there is a very healthy attitude on the part of the most of our lads against wilful destruction of bird life. $1,000 REWARD For a Case ot Incurable Constipa tlon.
