Two years ago Karen was on the way to stardom.

She was getting The Dark Tower," melodramatic t.er grew worse each day. Little things I should have laughed off made me angry and nervous for days at a time. I was too busy to relax, and so I didn't realize that I was working too hard for my own good." Then Karen left the screen to have a baby. She took a long rest in spite of herself. "Having a child has made me interested in people I never knew before," she said.

ROBINSON The Mart with Two Facea" with RICARDO OBTEZ tale tinged somewhat with modern cynicism, is the stellar vehicle in which Edward G. Robinson appears, while the stage headliners are those popular and beloved radio celebrities, the Goldbergs. The Goldbergs present a typical Goldberg sketch, effectively staged, in which Molly, and Jake (Gertrude Berg and James R. Waters) talk over their problems with the neighbors, make plans for future festivities and try to bring up their children, Sammy and Rosie, in the way they should be brought up.

Yesterday's audiences burst into delighted applause at every misapplied word or expression, every "Goldbergian" philosophy. The sketch was written by Gertrude Berg, who is Molly, the originator of the act. "The Dark Tower," dramatically describes the powerful effect for evil which an erring husband with powers of hypnotism has on his actress wife. The scene opens with lovely Jessica Wells tasting her first success for many seasons. Her husband, one learns, had died a short time before, and Jessica had come out of a neryous breakdown at the same time.

Stanley Vance (Louis Calhern) did not die, and comes back to plague his wife and her. adoring family. The brother, brilliant but scapegrace actor, decides to rid his sister of her husband and her obsession at the same time. He manages to do it, but one must see the picture to appreciate his artful and apparently foolproof scheme. However, he makes one mistake.

Fortunately the picture leaves the audience with the impression that his histrionic ability will get him off from the consequences ot his auite understandable crime. dth4 thrmiPh were discontinued by the railroad" 14 MARY ASTOK Changing trends of suburban travel are responsible for the demolition ow in progress of the Winter Hill Station of the Boston Maine Railroad. '4 CHAPTER The Tragedy The wedding of Jean Harlow and Paul Bern, while by no means a complete surprise to the motion picture colony, was a leading topic of conversation for many weeks. Jean was one of the outstanding young stars, Bern a brilliant young executive for M-G-M, and a very 'popular figure in Hollywood. Bern presented his young wife with a beautiful hillside home, one of the loveliest in the picture colony, and the future seemed filled with the richest promise. Then, within the space of a few months, the blow fell. On Labor Day, 1932, Paul Bern committed suicide in his Hills home, leaving a rather ambiguous note, asking his wife to forgive him for the act.

Fantastic articles were invented suggesting motives for the suicide, though it was obvious that the act was that of a highly introspective temperament. Then she was again costarred with Clark Gable in "Hold Your Man." Then, for the first time since th tragedy; Miss Harlow was seen c-casionally in restaurants and mblic places in the company of Hal Rosson, the cameraman who had photographed "Red Headed Woman" and "Red Dust." She had first met him on the set where the former picture was being filmed, although Marino Bello, her stepfather, and he were old friends. She found Rosson an intelligent, likable companion when her father arranged a threesome at golf which included him.

After that Rosson became a frequent visitor at their home. Severnl months later, in Yuma, Ariz, they were married. Jean Harlow's soaring meteor of screen popularity reached a new high mark in "Dinner at Eight." Never for a moment was she lost in the stellar labyrinth of Barrymores, Beerys and Dresslers. The morning after this Ferber-Kaufman stage success had its picture premiere at the Astor Theatre, New York, all the confidence shown in Miss Harlow was more than justified. The hard-boilei Gotham critics, men and women, who avoid superlatives as they would the plague, called her "magnificent" In her role.

Then, in "Bombshell," she repealed this success in a starring production of her own. Now in her new picture, "The Girl From Missouri," which is now playing at Loew's State Theatre in Boston, Miss Harlow attains the full measure of stardom. In it she hns one of the most colorful modern roles of her career. Franchot Tone, Lionel Barrymore and Lewis Stone are tea-' tured in the supporting cast. The promise shown by a newcomer in "Hell's Angels" has been fulfilled.

The story was written by the star himself. Conrad Nagel, who has been away from the screen so long, has been signed to play the lead in "Dangerous Corner" opposite Virginia Bruce. Erin O'Brien-Moore will also have an important role in the picture. Four films awaited Marie Dressier. In today's hand the East player found that the only way of defeating the opposing game contract was by making what would seem to the casual observer the worst possible lead.

The declarer went, up with the King in Dummy, forcing East to win with the Ace in an effort to make it easier for East to continue the suit. Obviously, a diamond continuation is exactly what South wants. East, however, quite correctly chose to believe his partner's fourth-best lead and decided that a second diamond lead would be futile.

From the bidding he decided that the declarer very probably had four clubs to the Jack-10, and that these clubs, after being set up, could be-used for spade discards in Dummy. East, of course, knew that to defeat the contract four tricks would be needed. He already had one diamond trick and the certaintly of being able to win two club tricks. From the bidding the South player was marked with the Ace and King of hearts, and the only hope of finding a fourth trick lay in the spade suit. Obviously, a spade trick had to be AMUSEMENTS a ougniiy ana strengin or cnaracier which few actresses in Hollywood, or anywhere else, would have been able to muster in such a grief-filled time.

As soon as the initial shock had been met and overcome, she went ahead with her picture work and completed all productions that had been scheduled for her earlier in the year. "There is no peace of mind except in work," she told her family simply. Jean Harlow had been working in "Red Dust" at the time of the Bern tragedy. She went on bravely with the filming of this production, remaining ip seclusion when not on the set.
