Last Winter, in Arizona, Judge Landis predicted that baseball would take at least a 25 percent jump over the year before. This is Labor Day, with the stretch just ahead and baseball has already beaten this increase. "I should say we are just about 30 percent ahead of John Heydler, president of the National League, said. "And the peculiar feature is that Sunday baseball in Philadelphia hurt, rather than helped, as far as attendance goes. The answer is simple.

The Phillies have not been up in the pennant fight and most of the dates given to Philadelphia were taken away from Brooklyn a great Sunday town. Boston hasn't done quite so well as last year but well enough. I believe September will be another good month one of the best we have had. "As I understand the American League has had about the same increase. Detroit has had a big year, while New York and Boston, I know, are well beyend a year ago." wnmiROP.

He railed his Reina to victory in the Class tMarconi, and drew two guns frora the judges boat. Ordinarily one gun is the salute to a class winner. But it has been so many, jnany moons since Skipper Karsicck paraded home in the flagship position of his class that the judges decided to give the "Grand Old Man big hand, and they did the big cannon being used, so that everybody might hear.

Capt Kirshick, hailed as a ral iperunsaa. in the yachting fraternity arouad Massachusetts Bay, bowed modestly at the boisterous reception, and later at the club-he use received the plaudits of his rr.ar.y admirers. Tr.rce vainer protests were filed itn the judges. One of them was allowed. csi the other two. forgotten. And three skippers were disqualified for the reason that they got mixed up and sailed the wrong course.

Goodell turned In a neat bit of psychology to win the first race, holding a pursuing craft of young women at bay by jumping scantily clad into the water. Miss Diven won the second race by clever sailing and better dodging of missiles. The pirate race consisted of a chase by a revenue cutter Joseph Matti-son Jr, sailing Vitesse with the other 18 craft having a five-minute start. Instead of cannon balls the revenuer was armed with tennis balls, A direct hit in the cockpit of a pirate put it out of commission theoretically, and the skipper joined the, revenuer in pursuit of other pirates. Skippers were armed with everything from garbage can tops to paddles to ward off the tennis balls.

Goodell sailed up a creek, beached his boat, tipped -t over so his cockpit couldn't be hit, and jumped into the water. IIis pursuing revenuer was manned by young women who let the pirate's inadequate dress keep them at -bay until male reinforcements arrived." As the last surviving pirate, Goodell won the race. The committee boat following the race spent the afternoon fishing up tennis balls, and at the close of the day both pirates and revenuers engaged in a free-for-all bombardment of the committee boat. REDSKIN RECRUITS ARRIVE AT WAYLAND CAMP TODAY Sidney Gillman and Frank Walton, stellar Redskin- recruits from Ohio State and Pittsburg, respectively, are scheduled to reach the Wayland camp of the Redskin tribe this morning. Gillman, highly touted end, and Walton, Pitt's mighty guard of a year ago, are reporting late due to participation in the College -All-Stars-Chi-cago Bears game at Soldiers Field last weekend.

They are in the best physical condition after three weeks of intensive training and with a real game under their belts should make things mighty interesting for the other candidates on Lone Star Dietz promising Redskin squad. Inasmuch as Coach Dietz plans to pick his first two teams this coming week, the scrimmage sessions of the next few days should see some fierce playing. Lone Star has more than 30 men drilling at Wayland and several of these must be let go or sent to other teams before the opening game with Pittsburg a week from next Sunday. I The first team is beginning to take shape with the eight veterans and some of the outstanding newcomers like Pug Rentner, Marvin Ellstrom, Gail O'Brien and Swede Olsson showing exceptional form. However, none of these recruits is assured of a regular berth to date and may be relegated to the lowly ranks before the middle of the week if some other player begins to scintillate.

Coach Dietz gave the tribe a day off yesterday in order that they might be fully rested for today's scrimmage WILD DUCK TAKES HEAT IN THE WEIRS REGATTA THE WEIRS, Sept 2 Wild Duck, driven by Archie Gulliford of Lynn, Mass, won the first heat of Ithe runabout championship race at iicus xidiuur ims airernoon, ine feature event of the annual regatta of the Winnipesaukee Power Boat Association. This was held by the Corinthian this afternoon at the request of the owners of the 25-raters, as on the day of the original race the weather mark was more than a mile out from its plotted place on the racing chart, and the stern was first around as her skipper was the first to spy the turning mark. Today's race was sailed in a quite light southeasterly breeze but under considerably better conditions than those yesterday in the Eastern Y. C. event. The nine 25-raters sailed the same course as Saturday, a beat to the outer southeast buoy, then a reach to Newcomb's Ledge whistler, and a spinnaker run to the finish.

A home-run hitter with the highest league average would be pretty well set on the hitting throne- (Copyright, JS34, by N. A. N.

Smoky Joe Wood had his share of steam, and the same goes for Grove and Rowe as well as Dazzy Vance and Dizzy Dean.

But none of these had the Johnson smoke. Walter still holds the double mark for strikeouts and shutouts an time and this is the answer.
