CORRESPONDENCE. Wo do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our correspondent Chilliwack. Feby 10. 1902 Editor Pkokess: Iii your last week's issue, I notice an accuuut of the Dyking system of Chilliwack. and while I thoroughly agree with you as to the sentiments expressed, there area few impor tant facts I would like to see thoroughly discussed, while this important work is beincr rushed to completion, It is in reference to a resolution passed bv the Municipal Council last November, to have the Chilliwack River lowered from Murray's bar to the mouth of the Semihault, taking up a fall.

I understand, of nearly four feet Had this been carried into efftct, it would have given the worthy contrac tors an opportunity of lowering the flood gates at tne mouth ot the seim hault to that extent whereby all the land Incatpd fron the Little Mountain to the Big Pr i i would have been thorough ly drained, and onoe thisdrainnge is accomplished a large area of some of the most fertile land in the whole Dominion would come under cultivation and where unfortunate farmers have in the past been obliged to surrender their farms to the inevitable on account oi the damage done by water, there would in the future be prosperous farmers and a large well tilled district of country, 1 might say further that I think all of the farmers interested in this vicinity will agree with me in what I have said, and that this is of vital importance to allot us. Would it not be advisable for us to meet and with a unity of pur pose discuss these improvements vith the view of endeavoring to have them put into effect? I banking you, Mr. tor, for your valuable space. Yours truly, Henry Nelems. Editor Progress: There is consid erable discussion going on among the members of the Oransre society as to what place the 12th of July celebration will take place.

It appears to my mind as an old Orange memoer, the 12th July is a thing of the past, there ai quite a number who will (1iflr from me in opinion as to the necessity of tbe celebration. Never did the great character William of Orange, snrnamed the silent exercise greater power over his country men than after his assassination by the emissary of the Jesuits. Ou the i day of his murder the estates of Holland resolved to maintain the good cause with God's help, to the uttermost, with out sparing gold or blood." And they kept their word. Tbe same illustration applins to all history and morals. The career of a great man remains an enduring monu meet of human energy.

Tbe man dies and disappears, but his thoughts and acts survive, and leave an milelib: stamp upon the race. A great deal of which pns es by th Dame of patriotism in these days con sists of merest bigotry and narrowmind edness, exhibiting itself in national pre judice, national conceit, and nationa hatred. It does not show itself in deeds, but in boasting3, in bowlings, flying flags and singing songs, and grinding over the long dead grievances, and long remedied wrongs. But as there is an ignoble, so is there a noble patriotism the patriotism that invigorates and elevates men and coun try by noble work; thatdoes duty truth fully and manfully; that lives an honest and sober life; and strives to make th best use of the opportunities for improve ments, that present themselveson every side, and at the same time a patriotism that cherishes the memory and exam pie of the great men of old. who bv their sufferings in the cause religion or of freedom, have won for themselves a deathless glory, and for their nation these privileges of free life and free political institutions of which they are the inheritors and possessors Nations aro not to be judged by their size any more than individuals.

It's not growing like a tree, In bulk, doth make man better be." S. A. Parsons. Mt. Baker Mining District.

The courts have decided that the Gold Basin mines belong to Messrs. McGhan Hatfield. Smith and others.
