This new German picture, adapted from a successful play of some years back, is a dated piece about an ambitious peasant who would desert his childhood sweetheart and marry a baron's daughter but for a change of heart on his deathbed. Magda Schneider, Viktor Staal and Anneliese Uhlig are the trio involved in this unhappy love story.

Fraulein Uhlig stands head and shoulders above the other two in her sensitive characterization of the rich girl who loved and lost the handsome peasant. Neither Fraulein Schneider nor Viktor Staal is an inspired performer and, consequently, their acting suffers by comparison to that by Uhlig and also that by the excellent character players in the supporting roles. This Rolf Randolf production, on view at the Casino Theatre, is picturesquely backgrounded by the Bavarian Alps and pastoral scenes. A soothing musical score is quite a help to this pedestrian paced tragedy. GETS 30 DAYS Clarence Hathaway, editor th Daily Worker, I oiniiiuiiist tiews.

have chosen Imperio Argentina, leading actress of that country, for the title role, and that the 48th St. Theatre should have imported a picture which is far-and-away better than any they've had from Spain. The film is not to be confused with the opera, which, although taken from the same novel, differs in presentation. Imperio Argen- tin Carmen comes from Triana and, while, she is not surrounded by so much singing as her operatic counterparts, she's still a femme fatale. "Carmen" closely follows the German film released over a year ago, "Andalusische Nachte," with Argentina in the stellar role, but, by reason of its being interpreted by the people Of Spain in this new version, seems superior.

Wendell Willkie, utility head and leading1 dark horse candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination, declared today he always has been, and still is, against getting into the present war or any other war. At the same time Willkie de-r clared that President Roosevelt and the New Deal belonged to the era of the Blum government in France and the Chamberlain government in Britain and must be replaced, just as the Blum and Chamberlain governments have been replaced. "The entire New Deal," Willkie said, "belongs to an era when French and British military establishments were weakened, and a soft and indulgent people accepted the privileges, but not the responsibilities, of democracy.
