It takes a most complicated method to get in touch with him on the ranch, and the secrecy that surround his hideaway is on a par with that which surrounds the comings and geings of Garbo. When he is on his ranch Dix plows, pitches hay, prunes fruit trees and enjoy the life of a gentleman farmer.

Other stars may spend their weekends at Malibu and other resorts frequented by film people, but Dix finds refreshment and new interest in his work as far away from pictures ad possible. When he made Ace of Aces Dix would leave the studio every Saturday afternoon and return early Monday JAMES HAGUE suggested that he stay in the kitchen. There are so many things a man can do in an emergency, and' you can keep your eye on that girl and see that she dosent take any of the sliver. I tried to get Walter, but he flatly refused. Hes off playing golf, I suppose.

Bruce considered escape and decided it was impossible, and as his' aunt went downstairs to greet the first of the floaters he beat a hasty retreat to the kitchen. And there at the kitchen table slicing a lemon he saw Patsy Well, how the Dickens! Bruce said. Patsy dropped the knife and turned around. Bruce, she cried. What a time I had to find you and then be fore I could explain she marched me oivt here and told me to get busy.

What does she think I am? Thinks youre an expe'rt waitress from the agency, I suppose, Bruce was explaining, and then Patsy put a warning finger to her lip, as Mrs Collingsworth bustled out. Youre ure you know what to do? she My nephew here will go errands for you if you need them. Pe sure to have the lemons sliced thin and have the sandwiches assorted on the serving plates. Youll find them wrapped in the refrigerator. The telephone had rung in the pantry and Bruce answered.

He explained to his aunt that the call was from the agency. He said they wanted to know whether another helper was needed and he had told them no. But Bruce didnt give the real message from the agency. Actually the helper had not started. They wanted to know If Mrs Collingsworth preferred Swedish or German help.

They had both and Bruce told them that as it had turned out they didn't need any. I had a terrible time finding you, Patsy was beginning again as she arranged sandwiches on a serving plate; and then Mrs Collingsworth reappeared with a slender young floater in pink tulle to Introduce to Bruce. Im crazy about floaters, he told his aunt on the side, but they rattle me. If you want me to keep an eye on things youve got to get them to 2:30. 8:15.

Eagerly she tore it open and took out the mesage. There was a single line: Delighted to dine with you next Friday at 8. Emitting an involuntary cry of elation, Mrs Jordan stepped into a pair of slippers, hastily threw a robe over her shoulders and, clutching the cablegram tightly in her hand, i hurried toward the sitting room, calling: Oliver! Oliver! Ive got the Ferncliffes! Oliver Jordan, her husband, was just finishing his breakfast. He put down his coffee' and looked up quizzically, Whats the excitement, darling? he asked. Im thrilled to death! I've got the Ferncliffes! Millicent repeated.

She put the cablegram down in front of him. I radioed them aboard ship last night, she said. Wasnt that bright of me? Oliver showed no enthusiasm over the acceptance of the invitation. Yes, If you want the Ferncliffes, he said. Want them! Why, you know everyone pouncesjon them! Besides, they entertained us in London.

Yes, and Ill never forget it, Oliver nodded. Dull as dishwater. Oh, how can you! Millicent exclaimed. A lovely formal English dinner." Yes and Australian mutton, Oliver added scornfully. And the guests who were a lot of people buried for years, just got up for that dinner.

Dont be American, Oliver! she paused reflectively. Friday hmm that gives me just a week. Oliver rose from the table. I have date next Friday with our daughter 'to hear Rachmaninoff." Its just as much your dinner as mine. "Very well," he surrendered graciously. -Mr Oliver Jordan accepts. The entrance of Paula Jcrdan turned thfeir combined attention to her. She was pulling on a pair of gloves.

Off to the marts of trade, she announced to her father. Hello, mother. She turned again to Oliver, speaking with good-natured scorn. Lolling in boudoirs 8 oclock in the morning! Whats to become of the shipping business? Millicents face lighted up with sudden excitement. Oliver, she said, suddenly remembering something.

There is plenty of action, but i su.pense; plenty of characteriza-tic- no sympathy. One can't get very excited about any portion of the film, although tle production follows the story as carefully as possible, i It is probable that the book was far too loag and involved to make a really effective talkie. Lewis digressed very often in bis novel (as is hiswont) to make his leading characters discuss what he himself happen i to think of almost anything trougling the world at the present time. One watched the development of Anns mind as well as her actual career. It was Just as Important to see what Ann thought of things as it was to see what she did.

Now it is next to impossible to get a really entertaining film out of mental development. And when one sees a character go through the motions, so to speak, without understanding the motives behind them, then the result is sure to be a little shadowy and UIIrene Dunne gives a brilliant, intelligent and restrained delineation of the vivid and colorful Ann. She does not succeed, of course, in making one understand the inner Ann, but it probable that It would take a Katharine Cornell to give a really suitable char-acterizatlon with all the Lewis subtle- fUg Perhaps the scenes that stand out moBt excitingly are those of the Copperhead Gap Prison. It has been necessary to make them brief, but they are not Inadequate in expressing the situation that Ann met and conquered. The photography, the action and the acting ar all excellent in this particular sequence.

The character of Judge Barney Dolphin has been softpned a bit by the scenarist. In the film version Judge Dolphin Isnt really guilty of the TOMORROW lo-a. the book he was a genial, clever but wholly dishonest man. Some of the characters appear so briefly that their relation with Ann and her reactions to them can only be hinted at. The marriage that Lewis described has been eliminated from the picture.

But all in all, Ann Vickers may be said to have lived fully in that period of life shown in the film. She typifies modern woman, and per haps the best scene depicting the Lewis theme occurs when to plead for the freedom of her sweetheart in jail. Honest, fair and. just, Ann has never tried to defeat the law through special privilege. But when the man she loves is involved she becomes a primitive woman fighting for her mate.

Members of the cast include Walter Huston, who gives an admirable delineation of Judge Dolphin; Conrad Nagel, Bruce Cabot, as the young army officer who first made Ann turn from love to a career; Edna May Oliver and Sam Hardy. Mr and Mrs Jesse Crawford, famous organists, present a half-hour concert on the twin consoles. The program opens with selections from Tchaikovsky, played by Mr Crawford. Mrs Crawford plays more popular numbers, including Butterflies in the Rain" and Lazy Bones. Trees is played by Mr Crawford with several variations of theme.
