Young (2-3), who benefited from three double plays, gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings for his first win over the Padres in five decisions. Chicago took a 4 0 lead in the sixth when Sammy Sosa triple with two outs and Bue- chele homered off Andy Benes (2-7).

PIRATES 7, CARDINALS 2 at Pittsburgh Tom Foley drove in four runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates broke out of their offensive slump by roughing up seven-game winner Bob Tewsbury in a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Tewksbury (7-1), who hadn't lost since Sept. 21, gave up six runs on six hits over six innings and failed to become the first Cardinal since Bob Gibson in 1965 to start a season 8 0. American League BLUE JAYS 7, TIGERS 2 at Toronto Joe Carter drove in four runs and the Toronto Blue Jays ended their five-game losing strsak, defeating the Detroit Ti gers.

Carter went 3 for-4 with a double. He leads the majors wrth 43 RBIs. Juan Guzman (44) gave up four hits in 5' i innings. He gave up two runs after allowing a total of 13 in his previous two starts, both losses. ROYALS 6, MARINERS 4 at Seattle Tom Gor "I thought I made a quality pitch on the double play," Henry said.

"Luckily, the ball bounced right back to me. I thought it was the turning point. of the game." DODGERS 9, ROCKIES 2 at Denver Tim Wal lach and Mike Piazza each homered, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to their seventh straight win and sole possession of first place in the NL West with a victory over Colorado. Wallach drove in four runs, giving him 1,000 RBIs in his career. Piazza drove in three runs.

MARLINS 3, METS 1 at New York Chuck Carr doubled three times and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning when he streaked home on a grounder, giving the Florida Marlins a victory over the New York Mets. The Marlins won their third in a row. Bret Sa berhagen (4 2) lost despite striking out 10 in eight innings. Saberhagen allowed all three runs and 10 hits. He walked none.

ASTROS 3, GIANTS 2 at Houston Jeff Bag well homered twice and drove in three runs to help Dave Veres to his first major league victory as the Houston Astros defeated the San Francisco Giants. Bagwell's 10th and 11th homers helped the Astros to their second win in seven games. Veres (10) won despite pitching to just one batter, relieving starter Shane Reynolds with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth. Veres struck out Matt Williams, who an inning earlier hit his major league leading 15th homer, to retire the side. Mitch Williams got the last two outs for his fifth save.

Hollins. Henry (1-0) allowed three hits in a'i innings Monday niht as the Montreal Expos snapped Philadelphia's four-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. Henry gave up one run, a first inning homer to Hollins. that continued Hollins' personal dominance over Henry. Hollins, who added a single in the sixth inning, is now 12 for 15 (.800) with five homers and nine RBIs against Henry.

"I don't know how many people are aware of our battle," Henry said, "all I know is it's a pretty one-sided battle. He just kills me and I don't know why." Damn Fletcher drove in two runs as the Expos kept Curt Schilling winless this season. The Phillies loaded the bases in the sixth with none out, but Henry got Darren Daulton to hit back to the mound, beginning a double play. Henry was then replaced by Shaw, who walked Pete Incaviglia but got Ricky Jordan on a forceout. ft Associated Press don struck out eight and, despite givmg up Ken Griffey 15th home run.

pitched the Kansas City Royals past the Seattle Mariners. Griffey homered for the third straight game, and tied Matt Williams for the most home runs in the majors. He was the Mariners designated hitter, a day after he slightly hyperextended his right knee. The Expos' Will Cordero was out at third base as Dave Hollins of the Phillies tagged him on an attempted steal. During El Paso's current 10-game homestand, that feeling is apparent in the statistics. Short stop Mark Loretta was 13 for 21 through the first six games. Out fielder Leon Glenn was 10 for 2-1 with two home runs and 10 RBI. Catcher Mike Stefanski was 10-for-22 with eight RBI.

"It really has gotten contagious." Stefanski said. "We've got a lot of players who can put the ball in play. This is the kind of team where you don't have a number nine hitter, per se. Everybody has the ability to hit in fl lot of different situations." The Diablos currently lead the Texas League wijh a .297 team batting average, 22 points better than second place Midland. Hitting coach Bob Mariano said Talanoa has made a few ad justments in his swing, but the biggest difference comes down to simple confidence.

"In spring training, we worked on him staying back and using more of his lower body," Mariano said of the physical changes in Talanoa's swing. "But a lot of what hitting is. is psychological. That, right there, is half the battle." For that matter, Talanoa's confidence at the plate is just as important as any other Diablo right now. "My job is to give them a con sistent approach," Mariano said.

"If they're consistent at the plate the production on offense will speak for itself." If that conies to pass, Talanoa will reach his goals of 25 home runs, 80 RBI and a .270 batting average. But Talanoa's primary goal isn't personal, it is to see the Diablos win a Texas League championship. "I'm here, a lot of us are here, because we want that ring," Tal anoa said. "We've been close the last two years (in Class A), but we've missed out on that elusive championship ring. Personal goals are nice.

I'd trade 'em all for a ring." 0 7 3 The hit man El Paso outfielder Leon Glenn was selected Monday as the Texas League's Batter of the Week. In six games last week, Glenn batted on even .500, 12 for 24, with two doubles and 11 RBI. In 33 games this season, Glenn is batting .271. The hit parade Through Monday's games, the top three hitters in the Texas League are Diablos. Derek Wachter, who was promoted to Triple A New Orleans early last week, still leads the league with a .385 batting average.

Second baseman Rodney Lofton follows at .357 and designated hitter Kevin Riggs is at .356. Lofton leads the league with 51 hits. Diablos center fielder Danny Perez not only leads the Texas League with seven triples this season, but also all of minor league baseball. Perez added his seventh triple Monday. Record pace The Diablos can reach the in season attendance today with a crowd of 3,934 at Cohen.

Monday's game drew 4,006. In 23 home games this season. 96,066 fans have watched the Diablos at Cohen Stadium. That averages to 4,177 fans a game. Family ties Jackson outfielder Gary Mota is the son of former Los Angeles Dodger Manny Mota.

"In college. I felt a little bit of pressure," Mota said of being Manny's son. "But I grew up mostly in the Dominican Republic and it wasn't that big a deal." Gary Mota said his father often helps him, especially in keeping a steady mental approach. "I'm not going to hit .500 simply because of my dad," Mota said. Today's pitchers Jackson right hander Doug Ketchen (3 3 overall, 2.83 earned run average) likely will start for the Generals.

The Diablos will probably start Greg Bicknell (0 0, 6.35 ERA).
