PEOPLE'S FRIEND The man who played Lincoln, Raymond Massey, will again be filling the role of "a friend of the people" but not the Lincoln version when he appears this Tuesday on "We, the People." Raymond Massey, stage and screen star, and members of the Self Employed Actors Associa tion of Brooklyn appear as guests of Gabriel Heatter on "We, the People" over WHP and the Columbia network on New Year's Eve, Tuesday, 9 to 9.30 p. m. The Self Employed Actors are elevator boys, clerks, stenographers and the like during the day. But at night they use vacant lots for a stage and present original plays. On "We, the People," Massey will play the lead in one of their original stories.

Other guests for New Year's Eve will include Dr. Jack Witten of Tazewell, who has reared fifty waifs in a thirty year period; Mrs. Mary McFarland, sister of Stephen Smith, sole survivor of the only absolute monarchy to exist in America; and Evelyn Asay, who sold her grand champion steer to buy her father a farm. Captain Jack Llojfd, Indian fighter and Texas ranger, also will tell about his friends, Wild Bill Hickok and Sitting Bull. Music for the program is conduced by Mark Warnow.

Once upon a New Year's Eve: Doris Dudley, ingenue on "Meet Mr. Meek" was playing John Bar rymore's daughter in the play "My Dear Children." WHAT'S HAPPENING: Uncle Ezra says that Christmas is a time when a woman wants her past forgotten and her present remembered. "City Desk," a newspaperman's kind of story, centers on the adventures of "Jack Mathews" and "Linda Collins," reporters, as they "scoop the town," uncover murder mysteries and expose political chicanery. While each weekly program is a complete story in itself, the principal characters are to continue throughout the series. Author Frank Gould, Brooklyn born graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism, has written for newspapers since his high school days. He was on the staff of the Brooklyn Times Union and later the Brooklyn Eagle. He has written many radio scripts, among them a play recently produced on "Columbia Workshop." Chester Stratton and Gertrude Warner have been cast in the City Desk" leading roles of "Jack Mathews" and "Linda Col lins." Others in the cast are Jimmy McCallion as "Caruso Lucini;" Karl Swenson as "But terfhek;" Ethel Owen as "Mrs.

ETHEL OWENS Harry Warren;" Jeff Bryant as "Jim Allen," and George Coul ouris as "Merlin." The initial "City Desk" drama deals with the story of the murder of an actress, Madeline Turner, whose life entangled her in a web of mysterious circumstances. The star reporter not only gets his story, but uncovers facts which lead to a surprising turn in the case. "City Desk" is sponsored by Colgate Palmolive Peet on behalf of Palmolive Shave Cream and Palmolive Brushless Shave. Workshop" Features Announcer's Drama "Columbia Workshop" is to present an original radio drama, "Dr. Johnson in Scotland," written by James Fleming, ace CBS announcer, and based upon the Great Lexicographer's visit to Edinburgh in his late years, as related in Bos well's "Life of Johnson" and other works.

The broadcast will be heard through WHP Sunday, 10.30 to 11.00 p. m. This is Fleming's first radio drama and affords him an excellent opportunity to apply his extensive college studies in English literature. He has been a Columbia network announcer more than two years and has been heard on special news events, political conventions and elections, as well as on daytime serial dramas. Eighteenth Century music is to be played by Yella Pessel on the harpsichord and Harry Goltzer on the bassoon.

James Fleming also assists in the production. Once upon a New Year's Eve: Ralph Edwards, master of "Truth or Consequences," was doing spot announcements on a small New York station..
