on Channel 13-KCOS (El Paso PBS) years. "They had all summer off and they would spend it in Michigan, with other show families. He loved that. There were a lot of other children in the shows." And by the time he was a young man, Buster Keaton was an immaculate performer. Using only sight gags, he could work wonders; his precision pratfalls were superbly crafted.

After working with Arbuckle, Keaton soon was making his own shorts, then full-length movies. "He was always No. 2 or No. 3 in comedy," Eleanor Keaton says. "Chaplin was No.

1, and he and Harold Lloyd were competing for No. 2. But Chaplin's things don't hold up as well and people don't watch Harold Lloyds as much Buster's pictures, I believe, were way ahead of their time. They were always well-thought-out. There was no hokey comedy that didn't go with the plot." Still, there were two decades of tough times.

Keaton found himself with little movie work and his own alcoholism. And then the comeback began, ranging from four "Beach Party" movies to other strange projects. "He thoroughly enjoyed them, but they were just for the money. His major money came after television began," his widow says. And Buster apparently knew how to enjoy such money.

Eleanor says she met him when she was looking for a good bridge game. She soon found there was always a game sometimes several of them at the Keaton home. "He'd play for extremely high stakes. You'd find him playing for 25 cents a point." A carpentry buff who enjoyed Elanning his props, Keaton kept uilding things at home. "He used to make buildings, bridges, all sorts of things for his train set.

He'd build them all over the basement." No one's sure if Buster Keaton really had a first childhood but he seemed to savor his second one. 10:00 PM NEWS' 7 ITS. I i had been on the vaudeville stage with his parents since infancy. (He was still a tyke when Harry Houdini called him "Buster," and the name "Joseph Keaton" was promptly forgotten.) When the boy was in his teens, his father had become an alcoholic with erratic timing; at one point in a show, Buster was accidentally knocked unconscious for 18 hours. But Eleanor Keaton has heard happier accounts of those Gannett News Service On the movie screen, he was a solemn presence.

His face remained immobile, as chaps and hilarity reverberated around him. And off screen? Buster Kea-ton actually did know how to smile, his widow says. "He was a very contented man, a very happy man." Now he'll be featured in a two-part PBS special: "Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow." During those three hours, viewers will see the master comic flip, flop, fall and fling. They will not, however, see him grin. "He was trained, from the time he was a little boy, to never smile onstage," Eleanor Keaton says.

"If it looked like he was having a good time, the audience wouldn't laugh." Keaton did offer some tentative screen smiles, back when he was a supporting player for Fatty Arbuckle films. When he made a movie of his own, the studio persuaded him to grin in the final scene. "It turned out so fake that he made them throw it away and do it again." From then on, the Keaton face remained immobile while the body did remarkable things. It was a body of acrobatic elegance, just 5-foot-5 and wonderfully nimble. It could take falls and splats, most of them funny and some of them scary.

Didn't he get Eleanor Keaton once asked. "Oh, all the time," he replied. He had endless bumps and bruises, plus two more serious injuries. Once, he broke his foot. The other time, a doctor found he had apparently broken his neck "but he never knew about that for 12 or 13 years." To some people, this adds to the solemn portrait of a stolid man, the sort of grown-up who never had a childhood.
