El Paso Times Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1989 5C, Futurity winner ornery, not ordinary she's just put together to be a sound horse." Trainer Jack Brooks on Strawberry Silk 1, Jr v' Vt -I? million victory Monday. Martin said there was little doubt about the victory when they ushered his horse" into the starting gate a few minutes after 4 p.m. on this Labor Day. "She walked into that gate and never moved," he said.

"She was calm. I knew when she was that calm, they wouldn't beat us today." Strawberry Silk won the race easily, a full length and a quarter ahead of runner-up Moons High. But it was almost too easy for the big horse. Martin smiled, sipped a drink and said, "She got out there so far, she started pricking her ears, looking around. We couldn't see any other horses and she wanted to start looking around at the crowd, into the grandstand.

I had to show her the whip, get her back into the race quick." Earlier, Martin had said Strawberry Silk might be even better than Merganser, the colt he rode to victory in the same race last year. Asked again, he hesitated briefly, then: "It's hard to compare a filly and a colt. But she's tough. She's got a lot of heart, just like Merganser." And don't ever expect to pass Strawberry Silk without a By Bill Knight El Paso Times RUIDOSO DOWNS The Ail-American Futurity was barely history Monday afternoon, and Strawberry Silk was already in the books as the 31st winner of the world's richest quarter horse race. The horses were loping around the backstretch, cooling down.

One horse started to pass Strawberry Silk. The big grey filly perked up her ears, sped up and tried to take a bite out of the impertinent horse. jockey Jacky Martin laughed later and said, "She's kind of ornery; she doesn't like anyone in front of her. Ever." No one was in front of her Monday as the strong 2-year-old led the race from gate to finish line, earning Martin and trainer Jack Brooks their fifth victories in this race and owner Jacqueline Spencer the $1 million first prize. Strawberry Silk became only the second filly to win this race since 1977.

But Strawberry Silk isn't just any filly. "We had all three of our horses out there Saturday," said Brooks, who also trained colts Fly Moonlark Jr. and Special Project for this race. "She was the stud horse out there. The other two were nice.

She was in the middle, wanting to bite the others. "But this filly she's just put together to be a sound horse." Strawberry Silk is a solid-looking animal. In the beginning, Spencer thought she might be a little too solid. "I thought she was fat," the delighted Spencer said. "I thought she was way too fat." Brooks said, "I'd seen her mother running all over the country, beating people.

I told Jacque about her and she said she was fat and she was. But we talked it over and Jacque said 'buy and when this lady tells you to buy her, you buy her." Spencer paid $100,000 for Strawberry Silk last summer at Ruidoso. The 2-year-old filly had won $235,166 before her $1 Sports digest Daniel takes LPGA event with closing 64 Associated Press SPRINGFIELD, 111. -Beth Daniel denied defending champion Betsy King her fourth LPGA Rail Classic title in five years Monday, firing an 8-under-par 64 and beating King and Alice Ritzman by three strokes. Daniel, who finished with a total of 13-under 203, a shot off the three-round tournament record, tied her career-low round Monday with a pair of masterful 32s on the Rail Golf Course.

King was 3-under 69, and Ritzman, who led after two rounds, 1-under 71. Players were helped by a rule that allowed them to pick up the ball, clean it and place it on fairway lies. The victory was Daniel's second within a month, as the Furman University graduate bounces back from injuries, illness and swing problems that had seen her go winless for nearly four years before the Greater Washington Open in early August. Football University of Tennessee-Martin quarterback Smacky Brown and three other players have been charged with aggravated assault as the result of a fight at a nightspot after the team's 24-3 loss to Murray State University. Coach Don McLeary said Monday he had demoted four players but would not suspend them unless found guilty of the charges.

But she won the LPGA Rail Classic Monday. Rojas' wife, Maria de los Angeles, denied the charge that it was staged Monday during an interview with reporters in Santiago, Chile. "Such a ridiculous allegation doesn't even deserve an answer," she said.

"I would like to show them my husband's playing shirt, which was thick with blood." Chilean officials said he sustained a l'4-inch cut that needed five stitches to close. Reporters were not allowed to see Rojas on Monday. Sergio Stoppel, president of the Chilean Soccer Confederation, said Chile would ask FIFA to order the game replayed. was either faked or self-inflicted. Chile walked off the field after the incident and Brazil was given a 1-0 victory by referee Juan Carlos Loustau of Argentina.

"I am absolutely certain he was not hit," Dr. Lidio Toledo of the Brazilian team said. "I also can guarantee that the red liquid they said was blood was just Mercurochrome. The flare that fell is for signalling and is not explosive." Globo, a Rio de Janeiro newspaper, published a frontpage photo showing the flare landing behind Rojas and the goalkeeper beginning to fall backwards. Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -While officials from Brazil and Chile traded accusations on Monday, soccer's governing body made no decision on Brazil's controversial 1-0 victory in a World Cup qualifier.

With 22 minutes left in the game on Sunday at Maracana Stadium, a fireworks rocket thrown from the crowd of 160,000 landed near Chile goalkeeper Roberto Rojas. Players and team officials surrounded Rojas and he was taken off the field covered with what appeared to be blood. Brazil officials said the injury the author of a book on Nebraska football offered a former player payment for information damaging to the program. Jefferson Coach Javier Perea said his team's biggest strength is defense. "We are starting to filay defense. We'll be a well-ba-anced team if our offense comes around." Coronado is another team that could make the playoffs.

"I was getting stagnant," McCutcheon said of the coaching move that took her to Coronado. "I needed a change. I felt as if I wasn't giving the girls (at Burges) my best." McCutcheon thinks it's going to take three years to implement her coaching program fully at Coronado. The T-Birds have one player with experience, senior Jennifer Ridenvour. Serrita Johnson is the only junior on the squad.

Coronado will play with four sophomores: Jori Leslie, Michelle Leivis, Lisa Carpenter and Jennifer Baeza. By Christine Granados El Paso Times Burges High School began the 1989 volleyball season like it has begun every season in the 1980s: winning. The Mustangs have reached bidistrict every year this decade. They may enter the '90s that way. Burges is the only undefeated volleyball team in the city this season, holding an 11-0 overall and 2-0 District 1-5A record.

Despite losing head coach Jane McCutcheon to Coronado and two starting players to graduation, the 1989 Burges team still has its winning potential. New head coach Connie Vaughn, who coached the Burges junior varsity, hopes to see her team go far. "Our goals for this year are to finish in the top two in district," Vaughn said. "We would like to go past area (playoff round) and to regionals." The Mustangs may just do that, with seniors Nancy Woo doza, both juniors, are two newcomers to watch. Austin, under second-year Coach Marian Bennett, lost nine players.

All nine played too, Bennett said. The only returning starter is Courtney Gentry, a 6-0 senior. "Courtney is the key this year," Bennett said. "She's smart, she has something like a 99.4 grade point average. You can teach her anything about the game you want her to know." Gentry has been named outstanding hitter in the Canutillo and Coronado tournaments.

The Panthers' other senior is hitter Corrina Espinoza. Austin, with a 7-3 overall record, goes into today's game at Bowie with a 2-0 district record. Jefferson, 0-1, in district lost to Austin last Tuesday in an opening district game. The Silver Foxes also lost nine players and have two seniors returning. Jessica Al-cantar and Rita Fragoso.
