Castaldo led off the ninth inning with a base hit to center field. With one out and the outfield playing deep, Falkner hit a fly to center field.

Midland's Bobby Jones couldn't reach the ball before it dropped and it bounced past him. By the time Midland right fielder Tony Brown was throwing the ball to the infield, Castaldo was already rounding third base. By Ysela Romero El Paso Times Vince Castaldo scored the winning run in the ninth inning off a Craig Falkner double as the El Paso Diablos baseball team beat the Midland Angels, 3-2, at Cohen Stadium Wednesday night. The victory improved the Diablos' winning streak to four games, marking the first time this season the team has won four in a row. The victory also maintained El Paso's three-game lead over "I looked at the outfield and they were playing really deep.

I saw the ball come off the bat and I took off," Castaldo said. "I took a chance they wouldn't catch it. I was hoping they wouldn't catch it." Diablos manager Chris Bando said it wasn't a hit-and-run play. "That was just major league base running. You can't run the bases better than he did," Bando said.

"Vinny read the ball instantly and took off. I knew he was going to score." Reliever Jeff Tabaka, 7-1, was the winning pitcher. Dick, who was the city's Most Valuable Player three years ago as a high school senior and a third-team all-state selection as a junior, cited lack playing time as the reason for leaving. The network television crew is expected to film enough of the Diablos and Cohen Center for a five-minute story to be broadcast on the nightly CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. The segment can be seen in El Paso on Channel 4-KDBC. However, no broadcast date has been set.

The story will also center on two other minor league teams, the Quad Cities River Bandits in Davenport, Iowa, and the Cane County Cougars in Geneva, 111. The Portland Trail Blazers evened the NBA Finals despite themselves Wednesday night. Starting horribly and trailing almost the entire game, they won as Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls came unglued.

Jerome Kersey pulled out of a slump and joined Clyde Drexler with 21 points as the Trail Blazers rallied for a 93-88 victory and a 2-2 tie in the best-of-7 series. Drexler gave Portland its first lead at 83-82 with 3:35 left when he slapped the ball away from Jordan, raced down the court and and scored on a layup over the Bulls' superstar. Jordan scored 32 points for the Bulls, but none in the final 10 minutes as he missed his last four shots. Chicago turned the ball over five times in the final quarter, with no turnovers for the Blazers, who trailed 10-0 in the opening minutes and came into the championship series tagged as the team that would self-destruct. Now, they go into Friday night's fifth game on their home court dead even with the defending champions.

The Trail Blazers, overcoming a combined 17-2 deficit in the opening minutes of each half, improved their playoff record to 9-1 at home this year. Wednesday night's victory snapped a four-season, nine-game home losing streak in the Finals by the Western Conference champion. The streak included five consecutive losses by the Trail Blazers at Portland, three against Detroit in the 1990 championship series and two against Chicago. Previously, the Western Conference hadn't won a Finals home game since the Los Angeles Lakers captured Game 7 against Detroit in 1988. While the Bulls are 13-7 in this year's playoffs, they have yet to lose consecutive games and won both of their previous Game 5s.

the coaches or players, Dick said. "I just want a chance to play and I felt my chances would be better at Texas I went down there, visited, played with some of their players and they offered me a full scholarship. I think I'll fit in well down there." It will be a double loss for UTEP, which can give only Dick two new scholarships next season due to NCAA sanctions. Not only will the Miners lose, a potential guard in the 6-foot-3 player, they will not be able to replace his scholarship. UTEP has already given scholarships to Proposition 48 sophomore Antoine Gillespie and junior college transfer Hector Gonzalez.

"I 'couldn't talk him out of it; that's the bottom line," said Miner assistant G. Ray Johnson. "We wanted him to stay. We tried to explain our situation maybe not next year for him, but the year after." Dick red-shirted two years ago at UTEP, then was a member of last year's squad. He will be eligible immediately at the Division 2 school that is located in south Texas, about 45 miles from Corpus Christi.

The numbers will get rather thin after next season. Mario Finner left school last year and ultimately transferred to Missouri. Now Dick is gone. UTEP added red-shirts Brian Barnes and Phil Crocker, but next season UTEP will lose five seniors Rivera, Bice, Roy Howard, Johnny Melvin and John Portis. The Miners can add two more via scholarship, but that will leave them with an eight-man scholarship roster Darryl Christopher, Ralph Davis, Gonzalez, Gillespie, Barnes, Crocker and two new scholarships.

Final vote today on Mariners sale NEW YORK The sale of the Seattle Mariners to a Japanese-led group was approved in principle Wednesday in separate votes by the American and National leagues, who then set a formal vote for a joint session today. AL president Bobby Brown said the sale received the necessary three-quarters majority during his league's session, and NL spokeswoman Katy Feeney said there was no significant opposition -in her league.

McMahon considers jump to Vikings, if price is right By Don Henry El Paso Times If the Philadelphia Eagles won't make Jim McMahon a $1 million offer, will the Minnesota Vikings? McMahon got off the plane at El Paso International Airport Wednesday expressing his frustration over the salary he's being paid by the Eagles as an NFL quarterback. McMahon wants to play for Philadelphia because he sees Super Bowl potential with the club. If contract negotiations dont't work out, however, he's willing to talk to the Vikings. The veteran quarterback is in El Paso to oversee the annual Cancer Treatment Center Celebrity benefit, an event for-which he says he enjoys acting as host. "People have always been nice to us, it's for a good cause.

At the same time, however, he's thinking about the upcoming NFL season and his weekly paychecks. He wants to top the $1 million mark "at least," he says with $1.2 million the figure mentioned as his goal to play for the Eagles. By Rick Taylor El Paso Times It's scary to think Coronado High has advanced to the Final Four of the Texas Class 5A baseball playoffs without playing its best. But Coronado assistant coach Steve Mims says it's true. "We haven't played well since the second game of the Permian series," Mims said.

Coronado beat Permian 8-1 in that game. It's Coronado's only playoff victory not decided by two runs or less. Coronado (27-9) plays Brazos-wood (28-3) in the semifinals of the playoffs today. The winner plays for the state championship Friday at 7 p.m. (MDT) against the winner of the Lufkin (29-9) and South San Antonio (20-6) semifinal.

Coronado is Jooking to become the first El Paso team since Bowie in 1949 to win a state baseball title. The T-Birds have struggled defensively and, at times, offensively in recent playoff games. "We'll certainly have to play better than we did last Friday, Mims said of Coronado's 5-4 victory in the Region 1 championship against Grapevine. "We'll have to go up a notch to beat Brazoswood. "Obviously, they're fundamentally sound.

They get great me back too. They just don't want to pay. They've had me cheap for the last two years. This'll be my 11th year, and I've never made over a million dollars." McMahon, a 10-year veteran out of Brigham Young, led the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl championship after the 1985 season. Last fall, McMahon worked under a contract worth a reported $575,0000 with $500,000 in performance bonuses.

McMahon's dilemma is that he is Philadelphia property and isn't supposed to deal with any other club without the Eagles' permission. He was still recovering from surgery on his Please see McMahon 5C Last year, McMahon stepped in for injured quarterback Randall Cunningham then started 11 games for Eagles. Then McMahon was injured, too. "It's a little irritating," McMahon said, "seeing everybody else (quarterbacks) making two or three (million a year) not one of them has gone to a Super Bowl it's just frustrating. "I think Philadelphia is capable of going to the Super Bowl if I go back there.

I've had feelers from Minnesota all this has happened within the last two weeks. "I like Philadelphia, I like the team, I like the coach and staff.
