Nelson Broms, president and chief executive officer of Equitable Life Holding subsidiary of the New York firm, said yesterday approaches have been made to both life and holding companies in Canada but no offers have yet been received. Broms said Equitable is trying to sell the Canadian operation because the policies of a big company are not compatible with operating a small one on foreign soil.

"We have determined to retire to the U.S. and will be more comfortable running a big scale operation." If Heritage is sold, Equitable will no longer be able to call itself an international company with all its operations confed to the U.S. Heritage, which began in Toronto in mid-1975, has assets of about 20 million, compared with $750 million for the parent firm. It has $160 million in life insurance in force with more than 4,000 policy holders, all in Ontario. Get a free TOQUE when you rent a car from Budget.
