Joyce Van Patten Is Back On Broadway By REBECCA MOREHOUSE Women's News Service NEW YORK Joyce Van Patten seemed to be floating above a table at Sardi's, a luminous smile on her face. She's back on Broadway, she's in an established hit, "Same Time, Next Year," and she couldn't be happier. "I didn't realize bow excited I would be until I got back to New York," she said. "I was in such a euphoric state, feeling so terrific, I slammed a cab door on my finger. I walked about a block and I buckled.

But I rehearsed that afternoon. "It's such a relief to come back in a hit play. There is nothing like doing a play in New York, from the bad dressing rooms on down and up. The dressing rooms in Los Angeles are so antiseptic, they don't even want you to put nails in the walls." She and Conrad Janis have a Burstyn-Charles Grodin roles in Bernard Slade's comedy at the Brooks Atkinson Theater. After six weeks they will tour while the play continues here with other actors.

It follows the romance of a married man, a married woman, who rendezvous once a year for 25 years. "Gene Saks, the director, sent the play to me in California," she said. "I didn't feel I wanted to leave Los Angeles but I felt a kinship with this part. She's a real woman with a strong desire to be free. I think I have that kind of thing in me." In California, she acts in movies, television and theater, recently completed the unreleased films, "The Bad News Bears" with Walter Matthau and "Mikey and Nickey" with Peter Falk and John Cassavettes, directed by Elaine May.

"It's an unexpected film for Elaine because it's about two hoods. I play John's wife. Elaine makes you feel creative. Her mind works in such a weird way it's fun just to have tea with her. Peter ACTRESS Falk is all work in a film, he hardly talks to you.

"I think I've done too much television. There's so much kidding around in TV, a lot of jerks and smart-alecks are involved in series. They'll arrive on set and not know their lines." Joyce is a charming, hazel- eyed blonde and a divorcee. Her boyfriend, Dennie Dugan, a movie actor, was with her here. "I went to California in 1961 with my actor-husband.

After I got a divorce I began to do a lot of different things and I didn't want to bring my two children back here to galoshes and snow. "When I first went out, there was almost no theater. but there's a lot of it now and the critics are more respectful. Theater is no longer thought of as something to do between movies." She did 15 Broadway plays as a child and adult, at nine bowled over the critics in "Tomorrow the World." Her 6, 1975 13B brother, Richard Van Patten, plays Friar Tuck in the ABC- TV series, "When Things Were Rotten." "My mother was a stage mother, really. She started us modeling and that led naturally to acting.

My parents were divorced. My mother's in Los Angeles and my father lives in Massapequa, Long Island. He remarried and has four children, the youngest than my She and Conrad Janis will take "Same Time, Next Year" to Toronto, Cleveland, St. Louis, Denver, Los Angeles and Chicago.
