"Washington has hit me well for a long time," said Jones, who was making his first major league start since 1981. "I can't figure out how to get him out." Diablos move back into lst-place tie By Randy Weinglass El Paso Times It was an evening of changes at Dudley Field as the El Paso Diablos pulled into a first-place tie in the Texas League Western Division with a 8-6 baseball victory over Arkansas. The scheduled starting pitcher for the Diablos, Jeff Peterek, was promoted to Class AAA Denver just hours before the game. His replacement, Bill Mooneyham, was told he was starting as he arrived at the ballpark.

Diablos utility infielder Fred Williams also was suprised to find his name listed as the starting cen-terfielder. Matias Carrillo was sidelined with a minor muscle pull. The victory places the Diablos in a first-place tie with San Antonio, which lost to Shreveport 4-3 Saturday night. The last-minute changes didn't hurt the (layers in question. Wil-iams drove in four runs with a pair of doubles and Mooneyham earned his second victory of the season by going 6 innings, allowing four runs.

Williams, who has played second base, shortstop, third base and all three outfield positions, hit the game-winning RBI with his fourth-inning two-run double. It was his team-leading, fourth game with four RBI. Williams was coming off a poor road trip and he has shown he was glad to get home to El Paso. "Since coming home I've really started to get back to the basics and now I'm swinging the bat pretty well," Williams said. "They've given me a chance to play everyday and now my hitting is coming around, I've started in all three outfield positions and all but first base in the infield," Williams added.

Mooneyham, who was sent down from Denver last month, came up with his second Dudley Field victory. Tonight's game will be the last against Arkansas and the last of the current homestand. The pitcher for the Travelers tonight will be right-hander Alan Sontag. Left-hander Dan Scarpetta will pitch for El Paso.
