4 High Point Enterprise, Wednesday, November Cadillac Dimensions For '75, '76 Identical A general resume of styling and engineering improvements in the 1976 Cadillac was recently given by Edward C. Kennard, Cadillac general manager. "Our entire model lineup has done etcepUonally well from a sales standpoint in 1175, with several record sales periods established. The successful introduction of the Seville on May 1 combined with the excellent customer acceptance of our full size cars, has enabled Cadillac to make significant gains in the luxury car market," Kennard said. "Cadillac dealers now offer automobiles which are i i a a operationally competitive with all domestic and foreign luxury products, and we are poised for brisk sales action our 1978 models.

"Dimensionally, this year's full size models are identical to 1975 Cadillacs," Kennard noted. "The new international size 1976 Cadillac Seville stands on a 114.3 inch wheelbase, is 204 inches long, 71.8 inches wide, 54.7 inches high and weighs about 4,340 pounds." By comparison the Seville is 27 inches shorter, 8 inches narrower, almost Identical in height and about 1,000 pounds lighter than a 1976 Cadillac Sedan de Ville. Kennard also pointed out the 1976 Fleetwood Eldorado convertible remains as the only domestically produced convertible. Interior and exterior design changes for 1976 are designed to further personalize the existing Cadillac appeal New grilles for all utilize the traditional Cadillac crosshatch theme. The Eldorado grille design now includes a separate Cadillac script signature for the hood.

Personalized styling is evident in several new elements for 1976 full size Cadillacs. The wheel discs on the front- wheel-drive Eldorados are new, featuring a black center Is Excellent' Pioneer Says Expect Turbine Cars In '80s By ROBERT W. IRVIN N.A.N.A.-Detroit News DETROIT The man who led Chrysler's pioneering work on the turbine car says federal pollution rules and the auto slump stopped a program to build the turbines. But while the turbine car has been stopped for now, he says, it's going to make it into production in the mid- 1980s when it will be offered as an alternative to the conventional reciprocating engine. These are the views of George J.

Huebner who has just retired as director of research for Chrysler after reaching the age of 65 He is still president of the Society of Engineers "I think the future for the gas turbine is excellent," Huebner said in an interview. "But it's more difficult to say when because raising the necessary a i a is a problem for industry now. "This has slowed things down. There was a possibility that had we continued with the kind of market we had until two years ago that the gas turbine could have been introduced before 1980. But now it is perhaps 1985." Chrysler is working on a seventh-generation turbine under terms of a $10-million government contract.

The engine "is in the design stage although long-range procurement items have been ordered," he said, "I expect to see them running in the first cfiarter of next year. They will be put in a Plymouth Volare or Dodge Aspen. "The new engine will be much smaller than previous ones. This one will be rated and done in the metric system. It will be rated at 110 kilowatts which normally Dominate Highways The Over-50 club has become the most dominant segment of the nation's motoring population.

It's not the age of the drivers but the age of the cars on our highways. According to a recent survey, more than half of the cars in operation today have in excess of 50,500 miles on their odometers. While the supposition could be that difficult economic times have caused people to hold on to cars longer, the survey shows the trend to higher mileage cars has been a steady one. In 1968 only 43 per cent of the cars registered more than 50,500 miles. The latest study shows 51 per cent of all cars have exceeded that mileage.

The significance of the figures lies primarily in a need for more maintenance on the part of the motorists. By the time a car has been operated more than 50,500 miles, the following major services should be performed: Cooling system component replacement and repair; major engine tune-up; exhaust system replacement; new shocks installed; major brake service; replace tires; install new battery; plus other services as needed. a a into 123 horsepower versus the sixth a i 150 horsepower." The previous engine "was designed specifically for a midrange-size car and the new one is designed for a compact car," he said. "The new base engine is quite small and a lot has been done to improve its fuel economy. acceleration, it uses water injection, accounting for about 20 per cent of the 123 horsepower "The idea was to design a small engine which will give good economy yet provide a way to get good performance, too.

It will have the performance of a 318-inch V- 8 and the economy of our six- cylinder 225-inch engine. It's quite a good combination." The cost is "still the big determinant," he said, "But you are definitely going to see turbines by the middle of the next decade." A peculiar situation is likely to arise when this happens, he said: "It is possible that when this happens a car buyer will not only have the usual options of color and tnm but perhaps he will be able to specify his powerplant not the size but the type." Li other words, you could order your 1985 Chrysler with a turbine or a conventional engine. What other engines may be offered? "I don't see the diesel as a general alternative to the conventional engine," Huebner said, "but I do see the turbine in this role because it is quiet, smooth and doesn't have any odor problem. In other words, it meets most of the complaints about the diesel and can also use a broader fuel with 12 to 20 per cent greater yield from a barrel of crude than from your present highly tailored fuels." "There are some applications where the diesel will continue to be used. The Stirling engine has a little longer path to follow because it is a heavier, bulkier more complicated engine.

It has four heat exchangers in contrast to the new turbine with one. And it will probably be considerably more expensive." The Stirling is an external combustion engine which Ford Motor Co. is working on with the Philips Co. of Holland. In fact, a Torino equipped with a new Stirling was just flown to this country from Holland and will be tested in Dearborn over the next several months.

Chrysler has been in the forefront of turbine research for nearly two decades. In the early 1960s, it built 50 turbine cars and let the seemed close public drive them. At one time it seemed close to production. "We considered building them in the late 1960s," he said. "We bought the tools to continue limited production of turbines but were suddenly confronted with the Clean Air Act, and we realized that nitrogen oxide emissions were going to be a very serious problem.

"So it was sort of back to the drawing boards. For quite a while a lot of people said the gas turbine was dead. But it wasn't dead. We were working very hard on the nitrogen oxides problem, with a redesign of the combustion chamber and other things." lenca 'discovers FMT 75... there must be a reason.

All vinyl roofs, except tin Seville and Fleetwood Seventy-Five series sedan and limousine, utilize the integral padded elk grain material. A cross grain padded vinyl roof is standard on the Seville and optional on the Fleetwood Seventy-Five series cars.

Additionally, a new vinyl roof design for Calias and De Ville coupes is highlighted by the extension of the top molding as a continuation of the door "belt" molding. An exterior opera lamp, similar to that used on Fleetwood Brougham and Seventy-Five series cars, is now standard equipment on the de i d'Elegance "special edition" option, and now optional equipment on all Calias and De Ville coupes. "The Seville front-end design is unmistakable Cadillac, featuring a crosshatch grille, rectangular lamps, hoodface script and standup wreath and crest hood ornamentation," Kennard stated. Continuing, he noted, "Seville's uncluttered exterior styling concept is evident in the simple rear design, featuring large wraparound tail lights. Full wheel openings complement the formal Seville profile and roof line." All Cadillacs are offered in 15 standard and 6 optional 1176 CADILLAC CALIAS SEDAN firemist paint colors for 1976, of which 13 are new with this model.

Exterior paints are complemented by 11 padded vinyl roof selections, 7 convertible top offerings and 8 available color accent stripes. Cadillac interior design for 1976 full size models is essentially the same as in 1975. Rosewood grain trim is used throughout the interior, with bright wreath and crest and script plaques providing recognizable series identification. The Eldorado simulated wood trim is a unique carved gun stock pattern. Kennard noted, "Seville instrumentation is typically Cadillac and includes an upper instrument panel 'information band' and functional control panels to the drivers right and left.

Operating switches for items such as the power windows, power door locks and electric seat adjuster are located in the fort door area within easy reach of the driver. New trims for full size cars include plaids, velours, knits and 11 distinctive genuine leather selections. The Seville features as standard equipment front seats trimmed in the owners choice of seven luxurious "Mansion" knit cloth offerings or optional genuine leather, offered in eight colors. All Cadillac seats for 1976 are equipped with individual fold-down center armrests. In addition, an option exclusively for these seats is a power-operated passenger seat back recliner, which is offered in conjunction with the 6-way power- operated seat adjuster option.

This neaw feature, affording increased comfort Yor the front seat passenger, is standard equipment on all Fleetwood Talisman "special edition" option packages. "The Seville is among the most fully equipped cars in the world," Kennard continued, "featuring many standard customer convenience items on the interior, among them a dual courtesy and front passenger reading lamp, rear compartment reading lamps, an electric trunk lock release, power-operated seat adjuster and roof mounted assist handles." The Cadillac general manager described the engineering concept for 1976 models as a "well defined blend of innovation, refinement, to existing principles, and careful attention to the comfort, convenience and well being of the owner." Full size 1976 models are powered by a 500 cubic inch displacement (8.2 litre) V-ff engine. The optional Cadillac electronic fuel injected engine is offered oa all full size cars, except the Fleetwood Seventy-Five series.
