N'oves, magna cum laude. Massachusetts. Here In the heart of the Commonwealth that has cherished since the days of its first settlement the great truths of the Master, and where Institutions of men have been builded on the greater institutions of God, we meet once more and appreciate anew the labor and sacrifice of those who teach here and whose only reward is that which comes to them in serving the youth who are here for instruction, and in the knowledge that they are entitled to those simple yet powerful words, Well done, thou good and faithful servant. To them all honor is due. "In the years which Holy Cross has devoted to education it has never lost sight of the ultimate purpose of education, which always has been, and always should le, the making of character.

Education without character, without morals or religion, accomplishes little. Education that has with dt deep respect for the word of God, that recognizes moral obligations and that builds sturdy character, brings with it genuine happiness and a worth-while contribution to public life and action. Mere knowledge without character and Idealism is futile and barren. XVe have had that well illustrated in history. Athens lives today, clear-cut and impressive, because with material progress it also cultivated the fine and beautiful things of life that gave to Athens noble and Inspiring ideals.

Carthage Is but a vague memory. To idealism it was a stranger, for it progressed only in the wav of materialism. Carthage was the incarnation of materialism. selms, 24. Yilliam A.

I am tempted to say a word of counsel to the graduating students! of Holy Cross for whose eminent success in life I entertain high hopes. Grover Cleveland once said that a man without a college education wa apt to do one of two things either to exaggerate the advantages of a college education or to underrate it. I do not think I err on the side of underrating the advantages, still I have always felt, out of my experience Jn life, that I would rather that my boy ihad a working knowledge of -the teaching of Christ, whom you and I recognize as the only King of all creation.

There have been estimates that the number to be dropped in the local office will range from 25 to 60. and a similar ration fill be maintained in about 60 offices throughout the country. This is In keeping with the general policy of the Administration to cut the expenses of the Government. The policy toward a reduction of taxes has cut from 450,000 to 35cJn0 the number of income tax returns that must be filed annually.
