Marsh. BOSTON UNIVERSITY CLASS 1485 Continued From the First Pa go having three aspects, 'intellectual, ethical and religious. The graduate enters a world where there are all too many who fight to defend a the DePauw president declared. In choosing the ethical foundation of his life, the graduate must range himself eventually with one of two possible g-oups. He has the choice of backing what he.

is, or of backing what is right. In his religious dilemma, the graduate beholds either religion's power, prestige and its position, or he is aware of a sudden great force within himself that urges him to spend himself In service, giving him the realization that he cannot serve both God and mammon. I might tell you that you are going out to conquer the world, he continued, but as representatives of the rising generation most of you, honebt in your search for reality, despising sham, insisting upon sincerity, know full well that what you do so far as bringing mankind to the kingdom of God depends upon the choices you make as you face your threefold dilemma of the hour. The graduate enters a world wherein there are all too many who fight to defend a lie, themselves cogwheels in a well-nigh stopped machine. defend political, economical, religious racial lies.

These defenders, like the British dead of Concord, would 'keep the past upon the throne. Yesterday their fathers fought to defend ne lie of autocracy. Their sons would keep plutocracy in the best of state society. Many of our present falsities are defended in ignorance by people who la do not know they proclaim untruth he term lie defender is too harsh for these poor souls. Others defend the lie knowingly, but feel it safer and easier to defend a lie than to do the necessary thinking to adjust social practice to thu truth.

Still others defend lies selfishly, because the status quo suits them, and they know that change of any sort may prove costly. To Achieve the Lighted Mind On the other side of this dilemma the graduate finds a smaller number of persons struggling to achieve the lighted mind, dreaming of lighted souls. They represent the spirit of the scientist and the student, carried over from college lecture hall to research laboratory, business enterprise, modern pulpit, progressive legislature. They have resolved to search for facts and upon the basis of vertflable data, develop general principles. They know the truth will make them free and will follow it to the end.

I looked but tecently upon the handwriting of Columbus-certain marginal notes written in a Manuscript Book of Prlv-ilges. A lighted mind challenging the lie of contemporary geography and sailing westward to discover a new world The dilemma lies In the fact that if the graduate choose, the lighted mind, he may be choosing thereby a lonely way, the trail of the pioneer, with Its attendant hardship and its usual poverty. He may bring down upon his head the denunciation of the lie defenders. On the other hand if he throws in his lot with an acceptable lie, he must bid the ideals of the Alma Mater gnodby, respect his teacher but not the teaching, set up his own le-fenses and be ready for the foolish classmate who chose otherwise. The lie defenders demand uniformity, damn individuality, and become effective barriers to progress as well as Incentives to upheaval.

It is a dilemma, lie defending on the one hand, lighted minds on the other. But emancipation lies in the choice of the lighted mind. In his ethical dilemma, the graduate faces upon the one hand the choice of backing what is; on the other, what of backlog whats right. In our ethical dilemma what is, is xe-vealed in such phrases as part regularity, My Country, right or wrong. Apparently unable to do anything about it, we hack what is against whats right.

Back That Which Is Bight There are many people who tell the preacher, the college the teacher, the business man with penetration, the so-called Impossible idealist, to leave things alone. These people inform us that they will take care of what is. The problem, however, lies in the fact that it is not alone a case of backing what is. It is a matter of facing the compelling demand that springs from the nature of things, calling upon us to back rather that which is right. The difficulty, though, lies in the fact that men were created a little lower than the angels.

The galley slave of yesterday and the wl miner of today may have the emptiness of the ages in their faces, but in their hearts is the eternal was the hand that slanted back this brow? Whose breath blew out the light within this brain? If we face this problem of backing what Is against whats right, from another viewpoint comes the question. Upon what foundation do I base my right to Income? We know that wartime profiteering Is wrong. Is peacetime rofiteering right? The iasue Is laced in the International field. Some will back what is, namely, international anarchy, rather than back what is right, in a word, the establishment world law and order. The graduate enters a world wherein this conflict is an actuality.

If he chooses to back what is fight he may face the opposition of those who back what is; On the other hand, if he backs what is he may face a day when the resentment of the masses becomes sufficiently strong to destroy much of that which he has acquired as a result of backing what is. It is a dilemma in fact. The hour calls for a graduate leadership, possessed of lighted minds, willing to back whata right and making those necessary adjustments to bring better living to all our people, But What is Right? Philosophers have sought an answer. Perhaps we may suggest that right lies somewhere in the endeavor enthrone in conduct those principles that progressively attain real values.

We find real values in such phrases as 'the supermacy of the necessity of service, the efficacy of love, the potency of truth. In searching for his right religious stand, the graduate must decide whether or no religion Is to be for him convenient tool, aiding him in- his progress toward that which hebelleves to, po socially desirable, or a force that, coupled with a lighted mind, linked with a will set unflinchingly Ao do right, may become in fact a motivating power, sending him out to spend jtimself for humanity. From some 'points of view, it is not an easy thing to choose the Christ way. Jesus himself was crucified. On the other hand, religion as a form be chosen, we may lose that which Jesus possessed and which has made Him in fact the Savior of the world.

Whatever the sacrifice may be, It is heartening to know that in every walk of life there are, men and women who tealize the worth of the lighted mind, who have resolved to back what is right, who insist upon religion becoming a ruling and a redemptive foree. You will find men of great wealth possessed of lighted minds, men in abject poverty whose minds are ablaze. I might have told you that you are going to conquer the world, but you know better. "Tie choices you will make point your way. Business Administration Leads Te B.
