Hazen (Kiki) Cuyler, crack outfielder and center of one of baseball most sensational controversies, tonight was traded by the Pittsburg Pirates to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Earl i (Sparky) Adams, infielder, and Floyd J. (Pete) Scott, outfielder.

Sam WatterS, secretary of the Pittsburg Baseball Club, announcing the trade tonight, said the deal had been arranged on a straight player basis with no money involved. Pittsburg was represented in the negotiations by Pres Barney Dreyfuss and Manager Donie Bush, while the Chicago negotiators were Pres William Veeck and Manager Joe McCarthy. Trading of Cuyler had been forecast in the middle of last season when he and Bush became Involved in a controversy that resulted in the speedy outfielder occupying the bench for most of the National League season and during the entire World Series. EARL ADAMS Now a Pirate as Result of Trade one of the best in the circuit. When the Pirates slumped badly early in the 1927 season, George Grantham was shifted from first base to second and Joe Harris, veteran slugger, was stationed at first base.

That lineup was preserved during the rest of the season, but Harris, handicapped by various injuries, played most of the time on his nerve. His batting and fielding suffered as a consequence. Cuyler came to Pittsburg from Bay City, Mich. In 1921, but was sent back for further seasoning the following year. He returned to the Pirates from Nashville of the Southern Association in 1923 and became a regular In the next year.

He batted .354 in 1924, .357 in 1925 and .321 in 1926. This year he compiled a batting average of a few points over .300 and led his club in stolen bases, although he appeared In only a comparatively few games. He is one of the fastest men in the league and during his service with the Pirates consistently ranked with the leaders In stolen bases. The new J. A.

Protesting against the line, Cuyler maintained that he had made the correct play inasmuch as by going into the base standing up he had prevented a possible double play. Shortly after the fine. The acquisition of Hazen (Kiki) Cuyler by the Chicago Cubs was the chief deal on which the Cubs had decided for this Winter to strengthen the team. To get Cuyler the Cubs had to turn over one of the best second basemen in the major leagues, Earl "Sparky" Adams, and Floyd Scott, an outfielder. The addition of Cuyler gives the Cubs one of the greatest collections of fly-chasers and hitters in baseball history. Hack Wilson, Riggs Stephenson, Earl Webb and Cliff Heathcote are the present Cub fielders. Stephenson and Wilson, with Cuyler in right field, probably will compose the regu- lar trio.

Arena yesterday afternoon. when the curtain ivas rung up officially on the Harvard campaign and on Joe Stubbs career as a varsity hockey coach. The Harvard squad has been daily going through conditioning work on. Soldiers Field for the past week, but yesterday was the first time that the Cambridge players donned a runner.

Nothing more than a skating practice 3vas indulged in yesterday, but soon the real game will be on. tap. Stubbs has ordered another session of rudimentary stuff for tomorrow, and after that it is expected that the Harvard players will gradually work up to their standard once-a-day routine. Capt Johnny Chase at center ice, Johnny Tudor at a wing, Willie Howard, a defense man, and Joe Morrill and Windy Adams, both goalies, form the nusleus of letter men about whom Stubbs will have to build a team. Bobby Giddens, a product of Canadian hockey, is expected to fill in the forward line.

Last year the Canadian sophomore was looked upon as the find of the season, but we was forced to withdraw from college before the actual season started and so is still in the darlt-horse class. Bert Bigelow of the freshman team of two years ago, who did not play hockey last year, Is another who might well find a permanent berth on the starting team alongside of Willie Howard on the defense line. Bill Saltonstall, captain of the undefeated 1923 freshman team, not out for hockey during the last two years, was again out there on the Arena Ice, and with Lakin, Howard Wet-more and Guy Holbrook may form the spare forward line, so Important an aeset to recent Crimson teams. The Brown Dally Herald, through its managing editor, is trying to secure the cooperation of the Harvard Crimson to arrange a match between the championship Harvard team, the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity outfit and the championship Brown team, which will be determined shortly.

The Crimson has turned over to the Harvard athletic and fraternity authorities the Brown proposal and some action will doubtless be taken on the matter. Only four letter men are out for the team Capt Proctor Stanley, center; Teddy Abrahams, forward Earnie Brehaut, center, and Walter Weisleader, forward.

Henry Nessbaum has entered the Medical School and is lost to the squad. Fish Ellis and Leo Appiana, both letter men, will not report until after the midyear examination period, choosing to increase their scholastic standing. About 20 men answered Coach Manlys call.
