In the painting he recaptured memories of a lost love. One day he entered into a proposition with two men who said they'd pay him well to steal the famous painting. Perugia commits the theft. At a farmhouse where his two confederates begin their scheme of swindle. Perugia is horrified to learn they plan the destruction of his beloved masterpiece to remove evidence of the crime which has spurred an international police search for the art treasure.

I need a painting in three daysthe Mona Lisa." Jack Webb obviously was not speaking to an art dealer, since the Mona Lisa is now back in the Louvre in Paris. Nor was he talking to an underworld fence who might have had ideas to lift the famous painting while it was in the United States. Webb was talking to the man most of Hollywood's production bosses seek when they need a legitimate piece of art work for their make-believe dramas: Alex Rosenfeld. Ile created a Mona Lisa for the GE True drama of today (Sunday) titled "The Tenth Mona Lisa." The drama concerns the 1911 theft of the DaVinci masterpiece. Vito Scotti portrays the unemployed Italian laborer whose adoration of the Mona Lisa led him to commit the crime of the century.

Rosenfeld painted the copy of the Mona Lisa in three days. He did it on wood, as did DaVinci which gave him his greatest problem in making the copy look authentic: the aged look the original has. The aging of a copy on canvas of an old masterpiece can be accomplished with an air brush, varnishes and a cracking process, but these don't work on wood. Rosenfeld, using a needle-tipped stylus. spent hours etch PAGE 28 ACROSS I Mason or Como 6 Stoney II Lassie does it to Timmy 13 Concurs 14 Mongrel 15 Seen in sad shows 17 Stoney's pal 18 Fruit drink 19 TV medium 20 Direction for Capt Ahab 21 Avian homes 24 Morning moisture 26 Short-napped fabric 27 Sunset 29 Car 54 device 31 Chevalier's summer 32 Three times (comb.

Unknown to Webb, it was not the first time Rosenfeld had been asked to copy the Pa Vinci painting. He had duplicated the Mona Lisa for a scene in the Marlon Brando picture, "One-Eyed Jacks." For the movie.

Mona was pictured with a stack of poker chips and five cards in those famous hands in repose. She giaced the wall in a western saloon scene. Scotti has a second association with the Mona Lisa too, having played the little man who purloined the painting on a "You Are There" TV drama in 1956. DOWN I Nut 2 Evades 55.
