"What attitude did you take in the Thomas 11. Bowles, was brought up.

Mr McCurdy said Bowles was an agent at one. time. The money was in bart settlement of a suit Bowles brought against the company for claims after his removal for insubordination in Milwaukee. Bowles organized a campaign of policy holders against the company and the company settled the suit for He testified that Mr Bowles had been a successful agent in the south and west. and he was removed for "throwing in when his time eanie to have his btoiness changed according to the policy of the eompany, from a general agency to a company agency.

With regard to the charge in the Bowles letter that Pres McCurdy provided "fat offices" for his family. Mr AleCurdy in a lengthy stz-i tement. told how his son Robert ii. McCurdy became the general manager-. Ile detailed the education his son had reeived to adapt him to take up the foreign business, and said above all he was loyal to the corrany.

"I know of no other man's son in this eity or anywhere else." he continued. "who could have tilled that position as the man I appointed to On he charge that rebates were made. Mr McCurdy said he was aware of a eonstant attempt on the part of individuals who are solicited for big policies. to get the agent to divide his premium. and there is a temptation for the agent to "take the half a loaf rather than none." Mr McCurdy said the suit was settled to get rid of the policy holders' agitation and at Air Ilug-hes' suggestion Air Me-Curdy added that the agitation went with Bowles.

The compensation of the foreign agency was then taken up. Mr McCurdy would only say that he did the best he could under the circumstances in fixing his son's salary. The committee adjourned until tomorrow morning, with Mr McCurdy still a witness. FOR LEGAL SERVICES. William Barnes Sr Tells of His Connection at Albany with the Big Insurance Companies.

NANTUCKET. Oct 17William Darn Sr, formerly counsel for the New York life insurance company, but now a resident of this town, tonight discussed the statement made by Prep McCurdy of the Mutual life insurance company regarding Barnes' appearance in behalf of the Mutual life before a legislative committee et Albany last winter. Air Barnes said he had been but mlightly cenneeted with the Mutual life. although he had furnished it several different legal opinions on insurance cluestkna. Mr Barnes declared that the only money he had ever received from any life insurance company was for strictly legal services.

Regarding Pres Mc. Curdy's testimony. Mr Barnes said: "Some time ago I delivered an oral and printed argument before the insurance committee of the senate and house on feveral insurance bills whieh were tbere. This argument strongly suppt rted the provisions against the repeal of the section of the instiranee coda. which prohibited policy holders front beginning suit against a company while It was in the hands of a receiver.

While prtsenting the argument I met and tolked with Mr Hamilton, and was retained as counsel for the New York life, receiving a reasonable fee for my services.
