ACC Boskerixil! Preview An Encore For UNC? To Win 3 In A Row a Mrin tf fctlf tMim In t)w Attanrto By PAUL SHINN Spprti ErfHor What does the University of North Carolina do for an encore in the Atlantic Coast Conference? For two straight years the Tar Heels have won the regular season and the tournament, going on to represent the East in the national finals. The eniy thing left to do for coach Dean Smith's team is to repeat the performance one more time and become the first team to ever win both the regular season and tournament championships three straight seasons. With the exception of Ail- American Larry Uffler-and thaf quite an exception-- the Tar Heels will have basically the same team that carried them to the championship game against UCLA last spring. Smith explained it this way. "Well nave much the same roster as we bad last year.

This year wiH be the same as last year if we had lost Miller in the first 30 seconds of play. "It's hard to say now Miller's loss will affect us. It would be the same as if UCLA lost Alcindor or Houston's losing Hayes." Carolina's ace wiH be Charlie Scott, who played on the United States wiming Olympic team this fan. He and center Rusty Clark are expected to be the men in demand if UNC is to approximate the past two years. And most national polls say it will.

"I don't think we have any one player to fill Miller's shoes," the Ml Clark said. "Personally, I know I'll have to increase my rebounding." BILL BUNTING At One Forward Miller was a strong rebounder at 64, and 210 pounds. Of Scoti, Smith said, "He is the complete ball player. He may not lead us in scoring, but his passing will be improved and he is outstanding on defense. He's as fine a player as I know." Smith voiced some concern about Scott's playing so much basketball this year.

TUe Aii-AifierieaE candidate is likely to get some rest around February if the Tar Heels can work it in, Scott, at 6-5, can play forward or guard, and he may be doing both.

If he's used at forward, the backcouit will base senior Dick Grubar at one side and either Ed Fogler, Gerald Tuttle or Jim DeLany at the other. If Scott plays guard, the senior Joe Brown will take a forward slot Slim Bill Bunting win be the other forward. "Grubar is perhaps one of the-most underrated players by those outside basketball," Smith said of his quarterback. "If we hadnt had him, we wouldn't have gone as far" as we did." Clark, ol course, is the center. "Clark doesn't have the great quickness, but he was the most valuable player in the Eastern Regionals last year," Smith pointed out Smith went on to smack down persisting rumors of dark's being seven feet tail A measurement taken showed Rusty to be according to his coach.

And he invited all interested parties to drop over to Chapel Hill to check for themselves. Looking at the overall aspects of the team, Smith said a key to the season would be how well the dub. shoots. "Our field goal percentage will have to be better than last year," he saidk "Miller hit 50 per cent of his shots for three years. We hope to have a better balance in scoring this time.

"Defense carried us last season. It can be as strong this year. Our speed is not as good as with Miller. Scott North Carolina Roster FORWARDS Clatt Hgt. Wgt.

Davidson Coach Homer Smith of the West team has a tentative starting liaaip that includes Freddie Summers of Wake Forest at quarterback, David Lomax of Western Carolina and jimmy Johnson of Wake Forest at halfback and Rick White of Wake Forest as flanker back. Smith said he might ran Summers at positions other than quarterback since he also has on his squad quarterback Pat Murphy of Appalachian. Murphy, who broke his school's record for total offense, is considered a fine passer and is expected to play.

Bill Dooiey of North Carolina, coach for the East, has a backfield that includes North Carolina State's Jack Hebe or EUa- beth Qty State's Jotuile Walton at quarterback, Shaw University's George Spence and N. C. Bobby Hall at halfbacks and N. C. State's Settle Dockery at fullback.

We can't afford a mediocre game, or we'll lose. Of course, we may lose anyway." Smith said that with Miller the team the team might have trouble approaching last season's 28-4 record, and without him it will be a tremendous challenge to the team. "To win the regular season and tournament three years in a row is a rarity," Smith said. "la this day and time nobody dominates the ACC. I hope our luck continues.

Of course, it's not all luck. We have a poised team. It can control the situation." Smith said his 'playing would be the four returning starters, Brown, Fogler, Tuttle, DeLany and soph Lee Dedmon.
