CARBERRY. TKURO, Sept 30 Harry Whitney, the New Haven sportsman who is the most conspicuous nonpartisan witneaa In the Peary vs Cook polar controversy, says that Dr Cook left no records with hlrn at Annatook last April which can be of assistance to the explorer in establishing aa a fact that he reached the north pole. "All that Dr Cook gave me, so far as I know, when he left Annatook to sledge to Upernavlk were his astronomical instruments," aays Mr Whit ney. "I examined the articles and found a sextant, some artificial horizon Instruments and other scientific apparatus, together with other personal belongings. "Dr Cook did not impress upon me that they were of any value.

If 1 had thought thoy were valuable to him I should have taken the Jcanle from North Htar bay back to Etah and secured them. "But Dr Cook said nothing about any papers or documents or any date which he needed to prove that he had been at the pole." Do you know ot any reason why Dr Cook could not have taken all his records with him whep he left Etah?" "i supposed he did take all his records," said Mr Whitney. "1 know he took some letters Tor William Pritchard of the Roosevelt crew and mc. He could not take tha heavy articles that are now at Etah because his sledge was loaded and he could not get another because of the scarcity of dOgS." KPPipv. WAS MORE IN DR COOK'S CONFIDENCE.

Mr Whitney, the first white man to whom Dr Cook said he had been to the top cf the globe, it appears was more in the confidence of the doctor than In that of Commander Peary. Dr Cook frankly told Mr Whitney whnre he had aeen, but. up to the time the young millionaire transferred from the Roosevelt to the Jeanle at North Star bay. Aug 23, he did not know that Peary had attained the north pole. "Commander Peary did not tell me that he had been to the pole," said Mr Whitney.

"So far as I knew he had not told anyone on the Roosa-velt, not even Capt Bartlett, how far north he had been, up to the Urns 1 left the ship. Of course, it was gossip on the Roosevelt that the commander had been to tbe pole, and I heard that. "The crew inferred that Commander Peary had been to the pole ft the fact that he returned so soon when he had plenty of provisions left. But as I heafd the news, no one cn the ship knew upon any reliable authority how far the leader of the jxpedition had been." Harry Whitney is bound for his home at New Haven, having arrived at North Sydney from St Jobm, this morning. Is proceeding direct to Bostdn and was seei here tonight while waiting five hours for a connecting train.

The sportsman was much exercised over the prominence in the north pole discovery dispute which has come upon him unawares, and he was anxious as to whether either Commander Peary or Dr Cook were depending upon him for any testimony In the controversy. Makes New York in 4 Days 10 Hours and 51 Minutes. Vahey and Foss it is. The Vahey-Foss combination for governor and lieutenant governor, respectively, triumphed at yesterday's democratic state convention at Faneuil hall. Foss' nomination slipped by on the Creased ways of the convention a quick as one could say Jack Robinson.

There was no nominating speech for Foss. As chairman of the committee on the balance of the state ticket, John F. McDonald of Boston, for many years a Jamaica Plain neighbor of Mr Foss, reported the nomination for lieutenant governor. Opposed to a Territorial Form Of Government for Alaska. Mayor Hibbard yesterday declined without comment to grant a permit to Ex-Judge Henry S. Dewey to occupy an acre or more of Boston Common during the hours between 6am and 6pm tomorrow for campaign purposes. The judge was to open his theocratic campaign for governor on the Common Saturday, believing that Mayor Hibbard would not oppose his petition. The petition requested Mayor Hibbard to allow the judge the use of the bandstand on the Common, furnish him with several hundred chairs, a score or more of tables and a sufficient length of rope to inclose a space about the stand to accommodate an audience that may be omputed by the thousands. According to the petition the judge had intended to deliver addresses upon the "Unwritten Uw of Peace and NIGHT TODAY'S GLOBE CONTENTS.

Mr McDonald talked fast and chairman Hamlin put the necessary motions in rapid succession in carrying out the leaders' program. Much to the surprise of those wno had been following the proceedings carefully, nobody raised a voice in protest. Up to the minute that the last ballot had been cast, anti-Foss delegates among the labor element in the convention had loudly proclaimed their intention to voice their opposition to what they regarded as an unholy alliance between democrats and republicans, but Ex-Mayor Fitzgerald, who took up a position in the rear of the hall, got hold of some of the labor men and is credited with having succeeded in quiet ing them. Among those who threatened to lead a revolt was Ex-Alderman Fred J. Kneeland of this city.

As soon as the nominations were made John F. McDonald, who had not yielded the floor, moved at 4:15 that the convention adjourn. It was carried unanimously. The Mauretania, which wrested the title from her sister ship, the JLusl-tanla, on her latest trip, completed ner run of 2784 knots tonight in 4 days, 10 hours and 31 minutes, at an average speed of 26.06 knots an hour. Her best previous trip was 4 days 11 hours and 3o minutes, and the average sped record had heretofore stood at 25.87 knots hour. The Lusitania's best performance is 4 days, 11 hours, 42 minutes. The Mauretania' captain is. by no means satisfied that his boat has yet done her best, and he promises with better speed conditions to clip at least two hours more from the record he established today.

"We had gloomy weather all the way," he said tonight, "and for la hours we faced very rough seas, which naturally cut down our speed somewhat. The winds were strong southeast and northeast." The big liner left Daunts rock, Sept 26, at 10:04 a and arrived at the Ambrose channel lightship at 3:56 m. Her day's runs were 58, 661. 642. 667, 651 and 115 knots.
