HARRISBURG TELEGRAPH, Saturday, May 19, 1945 Hew United Brethren Church Bishop To Spsak at Pentecost Services Here The Rev. Dr. J. Showers, newly elected bishop of the United Brethren Church of Christ of the East Diocese, witn headquarters in Harrisburg, will be principal speaker in the Forum of the State Educational Building at the Second Pentecost service tomorrow at 7.30 p. m.

Bishop bhowers. who will succeed Bishop G. D. Batdorf, is from Dayton, Ohio, and his election was announced Friday at the qua drennial conference of the church at Westervilie, Ohio. The community Pentecost serv ice was inaugurated a year ago in the State Street unnea Brethren Church.

Dr. John McA. Ulrich, Steelton, will preside. The service will be opened with an informal song service under direction of Earl Caton, Jr, who will direct the choir of 300 voices from the choirs of the 35 co operating churches. The Rev.

George Leo Leech, D.D., J.OD., Bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, will administer the sacrament of con firmation to a class of approxi mately 200 adults in St. Patrick's Cathedral tomorrow at 3 p. Members of the class will come here from all parts of the diocese, There will be a pontifical mass in the Cathedral at 1 a. m. and mass officers will be announced today.

The Very Rev. Peter M. Stief, rector of St. Patrick's, will preach the confirmation sermon at the afternoon service. The confirmation ceremony will be conducted on the Feast of Pen tecost, the time at which the Holy Ghost descended on the Apostles.

Church of God To Gclcbratc 74th Anniversary A special program to celebrate the seventy fourth anniversary has been arranged at the Green Street Church of God tomorrow at 10 a. m. A feature of the pro gram will.be the attendance of members of former years. The guest speaker will be the Rev.

J. E. Lewis, pastor of the Highspire Church of God and the senior and junior choirs will as sist The Rev. C. Allen Byler, pastor, will preside and preach at the evemng service.

The Sunday School of the Green Street Church uf God had its inception as a result of a number of prayer meetings conducted in the homes of various members of the First Church of God in Fourth Street The organization of the school was effected in a meeting held in the home of O. J. Farling, May 5, 1869, but it was not until October of that year that the school began to function under leadership of Superinten dent H. Demming. The first sessions of the school were held in a school room at Second and Broad.

During the year that fol lowed increased attendance neces sitated that a house of worship be built. In the early spring of 1871 the All Worker's Chapel, a frame building wr.s erected by George Yousling, Sr. The third Sunday of May, 1871, the members marched from the schoolroom, to, the new edifice. After appropriate opening exercises the keys, were turned over to the officials 'and the dedicatory services began. The Rev.

D. A. L. Laverty was in charge and the Rev. A.

X. Shoemaker of Chi cago, preached the dedication sermon. The Rev. J. owen presented a special message the afternoon service while in the evening, the Rev.

Laverty brough the challenge to a greater work. At the close of the evening service the full indebtedness was met in cash. From that day on the Green Street Church has had the enviable record of having every subscription made, paid in full. Former pastors who served the church are the Revs. O.

Camp Curtin Church Plans Anniversary Day Camp Curtin Methodist Church will observe "Anniversary Day" tomorrow. A combined service of the Church School with the congregation meets at10.30. At this service gifts from the classes and organizations will be received. The regular morning service begins at 10.55. The guest speaker will be the Rev.

Dr. George H. Ketterer, of Warrior's Mark, a former pastor. The Girl Scouts of the northern end of. Harrisburg will hold a rally in this church Wednesday evening at 7.30.

in connection with the 41st annual convention of, the Episcopal Dio cese of Harrisburg. The convention will open with a service In the cathedral at 3.30 p. m. Tuesday, at which time the bishop, the Rt. Rev.

John Thomas Heistand, will give his annual address to the convention. Following this service the first business session of the convention will be held, Bishop Heistand presiding. Diocesan officers "will be elected, and nomina tions made for the executive council, as well as for various committees of the diocese. The bishop will announce his appointments to committees of the convention, and resolutions for consideration the following day will be presented. After a service of Holy Communion in the cathedral at 7.30 a.

m. Wednesday, the convention will convene at 9.30 a. m. for its second business session. The convention membership consists of the clergy of the diocese and lay delegates from the parishes and missions.

Lesley McCreath, senior warden of the cathedral, is secretary treasurer of the diocese. The Rt. Rev. Hunter Wyatt Brown, tired bishop of the diocese, is expected to attend the convention. St.

The Rev. Dr. E. Martin Grove will preach at both services. The Hope Fire Company and members of the Harrisburg Firemen's Relief will attend the evening service at 7.30.

Dr. Grove is chaplain of these organizations. The Luther League will meet at 6.30 p. m. with Miss Joan Pursel as the leader.
