The Carman band made their first march out last Saturday, and gave a very creditable performance. Everybody eemed pleased at tbe first result, and the interest shown by the residents of the village must give them great hopes of support fiom a financing point of view.

The band president, Mr. F. Starkey, surprised the musician by asking them after the performance to a grand supper. Of course all accepted the kind invitation, and did justice to tbe excellent spread which wa placid before them. After (upper the toast of the ban! was proposed by Mr.

Starkey in a few well-chosen words. Mr. J. White proposed the toast of the president, which was drunk with musical honors. Just before parting "Auld Lang Syne was sung.

The president's health wa not drunk with any kind of lie, nor. but with milk. Mr. ritarkey ia once mere the defendant fn the liquor case of last week. He was charged on three different casts to having sold liquor without a license.

He was convicted on one of the charges and fined $200. Buildings are still going ahead. A gen. era! store next to Mr. Meikle 's is just being built while a little a south of Mm fnrai-ture store is being built by Mr.

CURIOUS INDIAN BELIEF. A Remarkable Religious Outbreak Among tbe Indians. Gen. Ruger, the military commander of the department of Dakota, at St Paul, is investigating a most interesting religions excitement which ia broken out among tbe Indians ia various localities throughout the west Toe accounts that can be gathered of the new religious frenzy are very fragmentary. The Indians expect the appearance of a Saviour, a white man who is to protect them from the encroachments of the whites and lead them to happiness and glory.

The new belief is thoroughly grounded in their minis and under the leadership of their medicine men they have worked up a religions spirit which is unprecedented. Thoir confidence in the arrival of the Messiah ia unbounded, and their excitement at times so intense that trouble is feared. A curious fact in connection with the strange belief is that it appeared eimoltane-ously in several different plaoes, two of them 1,000 miles apart. The first mention of the matter is made in a personal letter from tbe interpreter at the Cneyenne and Arrapahoe agency in Indian Territory to tbe interpreter at the Tongue River agency, Montana. He says: "The Cheyenne and Arrapahoe bere are greatly excited abont a Christ coming in amcng arms of the northern tribe of Indian.

The Arrapahoe have been getting letter from Northern Arrapahoe in regard to it My friends here wish me to ask what there is about ft, and what do yon know about it They sent two of their young men to the Shoshone agency in Idaho a month and a half ago to find out all about it, but these two have not returned yet" General Ruger was apprehensive that the curious finaticiim might be takenadrantage of by some white man pretending to be tbe Christ, so Major Carroll, of rort Custer, was instructed to investigate the whole affair and report to department headquarters. A Ltter received from Majjr Carroll save that "the Iodiac at Tongue River agency are greatly excited over the expected appearance of a Saviour." The Investigations of the interpreter at the Tocgus Hirer agency are eummarized a follows: The Indian believe that this Christ is ia the mountains; that he wants all the Indians to oome to him; that he will put them behind him, and having all the whites before him, will roll the wcrld over on them (the whites) and destroy them; that he is a whito man. The above bas been told by Indians at the Shochone agency. In addition the Indiara say that this Cbrist showed some Indians scars on bis hands and feet aud a spear wound in bis side; that be wants all the Indians to come there, giving np firearms and using only bows and spears; that he is to roll the world over on the whites in cue they abas a the Indians. Where this white man lives the sun is very close, and the earth is so hot it turns their feet Xo grate grows there.

Geo. Ruger's opinion is that the belief originated in the teachiegs of the missionaries among the Indians which have become controlled by contact with the old Indian mythology. The meiicice men have also taken op tbe new creza, as it makes them popular and restores their wanicg indaence. TUKET THOICtlT Exlraftn! Trom Onr Conlcropornrlea-Wliat tbe Edlter Are Wrlllns Atxul. British conquest in India, whatrver may be said against it, is an extension of tbe reign of law where lawless despotism reigned before. It gives to every man beneath its sway security to life and property, open courts, regular pro cedure. It is in this, not in mere force, that it is strong; an army of sixty thousand men could not hold down by force two hundred and fifty millions. Tne Anglo-Saxon has the faults cf his qualities. His independence of spirit and self-reliance run into disunion.

A hundred years ago tbe race on this continent was divided by a miserable quarrel, and the French rival eagerly seized his opportunity of steppicg in and profiting by the division. There are men on both sides who for selfish objects, under the abused names of patriotism aud loyalty to keep that quarrel alive They will laiL That wound, too, time will haul, and the English-speaking racs npon this continent will be one again. Not to those alien communitie of South America -communities of Indians with a top sprinkling of Latins but to the kindred axu politically congenial population on the north, the eye of American etatetmea ahould be turned. There is the congenial alliauce. There is the reinforcement which amidst this ioJax of foreign elements the self-governing element neeis.
