R. In a Speech to a Deputation The Government "Will Assist the Road. Ottawa, March 14. Several railway delegations interviewed the Premier yesterday and to-day. Toronto men tre anxious for a subsidy to the Nip'using and James' Bay railway.

Sir John made a most important speech, which foreshadows what the government intends tt do in regard to the Hadsoa's Bay railway. He said tbe NIpissing road would doubtless ran through an important section of country; but he could not disguise tbe fact that a more important portion of Canada wanted railway communication, because there was a demand from all the provinces for more railway accommodation, and if the authorities had not taken the matter in hand the pressure on the provincial governments would nave been so strong as to compel them to do something. lie did not fail to recognize that while the deputation only asked for a subsidy for 80 miles yet that was but a part of a proposed line of 350 milealong, and nnless the line was completed to James Bay it would be nothing more than a local road. He further said that no fewer than six lines were projected to James Bay and their claims would have to be considered aa well as this company's. It i was well known that a round robin had been signed by a majority cf the members of the Hoase who asked the government to subsidize ths original Hudson's Bay scheme on the ground that it would be of vast benefit to the whole Northwest and would carry the surplus products of Canada snd the Northwestern States to Kogland by the shortest route.

The government would have to consider that matter. The Hud-sun's Bay road was the shortest route from England to the Northwest and likely to be of great service. He held out little hope of a subsidy to the Jamea Bay road this year. The Impression left npoa the auditors was that the Hudson's Bay guarantee would be given this session. EVERYTU1SO SATI3FACTORT.
