APIRM 13 1997' 25 DEATHS DEATHS DEATHS l'Ontirunrinas OTHER OBITUARIES I Page 46 Erskine Caldwell, 83; author best known for 'Tobacco Road' By Bart Barnes Washington Post Erskine Caldwell. 83. whose stark and compelling stories of deprivation. poverty and sex in rural white families of the American South shocked the literary community of the 1930s.

died Saturday at his home in Paradise Valley, Ariz. He had emphysema and inoperable lung cancer. Mr. Caldwell was chiefly known as the author of "Tobacco Road." published in 1932. and "Gods Little Acre," published a year later.

Both books were made into movies. and the stage adaptation of Tobacco Road" ran on Broadway for more than seven years. a record for the time. The novels were attacked by some critics as unnecessarily graphic in their descriptions of country decadence. but others said they displayed a sense of lust and humor that appealed to the most sophisticated of readers.

and they had traces of a sentimental moralism that gave them a certain respectability. In all, Mr. Caldwell wrote 55 books that sold 80 million copies In 43 languages. He was considered a publishing phenomenon of the 1930s and 1940s. and he was a record-setter in the infancy of the mass-market paperback books.

During the 1950s his publishers claimed he was the world's best-selling novelist. In a literary career that spanned a half-century. Mr. Caldwell never wrote anything that matched "Tobacco Road" or "God's Little Acre" in either sales or controversy. Both novels, especially "God's Little Acre," were banned from libraries in various schools and communities throughout the country.

and tpey were targets of several state censors on grounds of obscenity and immorality. Not until the prevalence of the artistic and literary liberalism of the 1960s did the actions against them stop. Mr. Caldwell also wrote short stories. children's books and documentary texts to accompany photo essays on travels through sections of the United States and Europe with his second wife.

Life magazine photographer Margaret Bourke-White. Mr. Caldwell was born in Coweta County. the son of a Presbyterian clergyman who moved often from one town to another. taking his family with him.

He held a variety of Jobs as a young man, including cotton picker, mill laborer, cook. waiter. taxi driver. soda Jerk. stone mason's helper.

semiprofessional football player and newspaper reporter. Briefly he attended the universities of Virginia and Pennsylvania. then decided he wanted to write for a living. For seven years during the 1920s and early 1930s. Mr.

Caldwell moved to Maine, where he devoted himself full time to writing. His first short stories began to appear in literary magazines during the 1930s. Mr. Caldwell's marriages to Helen Lannigan. Margaret Bourke-White and June Johnson ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Moffett Fletcher Caldwell; three children by his first marriage. Erskine Preston. Dabney Withers and Janet; and a son by his third marriage, Jay Erskine. NOUGHTOSIIn Peabody. April 11.

He was a Col. in the Civil Air Patrol and former Massachusetts Wing Commander. He was well known as a restorer of antique automobiles and had published the only steam car register of all known steam cars throughout the world.

35 Henshaw United Press International HANOVER, N.H. William H. Morton, 77, a former president of the American Express Co. and a nationally honored Dartmouth College athlete. died Saturday after a long illness.

Mr. Morton died at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, Dartmouth spokesman Rick Adams said yesterday. Mr. Morton, who was born in New Rochelle. N.Y., entered investment banking after graduating from Dartmouth in 1932.
