GASTON IS MENTIONED. Boston Banker May Be Made Mem ber of Federal Reserve Board When It Is Named.

WASHINGTON, Dec 18--Col William A. Gaston is being mentioned here as a possible member of the Federal Reserve Board provided for the Currency bill. He is On excellent with Sec of the Trees McAdoo and the Administration Is on the lookout for men of his stamp to form the personnel of the board. The position will pay $12,000 and if he is offered the position and accepts It Col Gaston will have to come to Washington to live. The post will be one of great importance and honor and Col Gaston's friends here are of the opinion that he is likely to look with favor upon it.

Col Gaston, William T. A. Fitzgerald and Josiah Quincy had a long conference today with Chairman Carter Glass of tilt, House Committee on Banking and Currency on the general currency situation. Mr Gaston talked currency from the banker's standpoint and suggested the restoration to the bill in conference of several provisions originally contained In the House bill that have been amended or stricken out by the Senate. The provision for the insurance of bank deposits and the provision forbidding member banks from extending to nonmember banks the benefit of the act were two things that Mr Gaston, expressed particular disapproval.

He considers the insurance idea unfair and holds that the clause forbidding the extension of benefits to nonmember banks as being too vague. Mr Glass talked frankly and freely with the Bostonians and Mr Gaston was particularly impressed with his fairness. Before leaving for Boston this afternoon Mr Gaston said that the bankers throughout the country had grown to respect Mr Glass for his grasp of the currency subject and his absolute independence. While no promises were made by Mr Glass the Bostonians felt that they accomplished something by seeing him.
