I ves of Meriden. anti W.A. Rhodes of Dorchester attempt to bteak the 100-mile bicycle record. There was a stiff breeze blowing from the west at 11 o'clock, the hour announced for the start, but it 11.20 it had to some extent subsided. The start was then made.

Both riders appeared in excellent condition. and were confident of success. as were their friends. Rhodes took the lead at the start, with Ives closely lapping' his wheel. This position was kept for the fIrst ten miles.

The wheelers were working at about a thirty-seven-minute rate of speed, not attempting to race against time for the first twenty-tive miles. At the thirty-sixth mile Rhodes complained of his back. and dropped out el the contest. Cripps then went in its lohowed by Mc-Garrett. Rhodes returned to tbe track later in the afternoon to alternate with the others in pace-setting.

At the fiftieth mile Ives was working away turn-fully at a four-minute pace. not liaN in left the flack. Tecre was consideraule wind at this time. and also during the afternoon. It was found at tifty miles that Ives had broken the American amaleur track record for that distance.
