Cole -of the Commission on Economy and Efficiency yesterday tendered his resignation, to take effect March M. He will then take up his "Booth Boston" work.

Gov Walsh accepted the resignation and says he will appoint either a Republican or a Progressive- for the vacancy, as there are two DemocratsFrancis X. Tyrrell and Frank H. Popeon the board. Writing to the Governor. Mr Cole recounts how he has accepted the.

"There is great work to be done in the Commission on Economy and Efficiency," he writes. "By law it requires the full time of the chairman, but by actual needs it demands his full thought and interest To give to the duties of the position the full time equiValent, as suggested under the statute, is not difficult, but to give to it the undivided attention and interest which my experience clearly- indicates it must have. for a realization of the full possibilities as opened up- through the work of the commission, promises to be increasingly difficult as the problems Increase." He takes the occasion to thank the Governor for his cooperation and aid. The ends of the temporary draw span were jacked up by means of wooden blocks piled on lighters and the lighters were towed carefully a distance of 100 feet from the westerly side of the new bridge. The rise and fall Of the tide did the new work successfully, with the assistance of George T.

Rendle, who did the planning. It was claimed that the draw could not be moved from the old to the new temporary position without being cut into sections, but Mr Rendle submitted plans to Division Engineer Frederick If. Fay of the Boston Bridge Department and convinced him that it could be accomplished successfully and with reasonable safety. This was demonstrated when the new draw span, weighing 230 tons, gradually, lowered with the tide and settled on its new The drw span is 163 feet long and 30 feet wide. The building of the temporary bridge is preliminary to the construction in the future of a large permanent bridge at this point at a cost of about $400,000.

The temporary bridge will greatly improve traffic conditions, both by land and water. The old bridge had outlived its usefulness. Its draw span was built 37 years ago and was not intended to meet the heavy demands of modern street car travel.
