THE BOSTON GLOBE-TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1907. AMUSEMENTS FINE MINIATURES. AMUSEMENTS Splendid Exhibition on View in This City. DROP merits of Sec Taft explain tha heartiness of his reception and that he ha the honor of an audience of the emperor, but It is a mistake to suppose that Mr Taft's visit is In any way connected with a chungje in the internal policy of Russia. "There la not a word of truth In tha rumors that we are to give a base for an American fleet at Vladivostok or any other Pacific port, but the visit of Sec Taft will renew and strengthen the old bonds of sympathy between Russia and America." Mr Taft la expected to allude to the rumors In a speech at the banquet to be giv6n him this evening by the members of the American colony of this city: he will then give them American denial.

CUM Again aM Apii ii st MmWi MAJESTIC tunity for comparison of contemporary work by the artists of thene three sec-tics. And It might be said In passing that the work of the Boston miniaturists more than holds its own with that of the work by the New York and Pennsylvania artists. The exhibition as a whofe proves that In America today are miniature painters who are doing work which rivals the finest work of the kind ever done.

However, unlike the great miniature painters of the 18th century and the early part of the 19th century, most of the miniature painting today is done by women artists for whom this line of artistic work seems to have a peculiar attraction. There are probably two reasons for this. In the first place, the average young woman who studies painting naturally wants to turn her skill to profitable use as quickly as possible, and the miniature field offers an opportunity in this respect which the larger field of llfe-sie portrait painting does not afford. The second reason is that miniature painting naturally appeals to women; In its finesse there is a charm, and there is a sensitiveness required in the work which lenders it perhaps more adaptable to the average woman artist than to the average male artist. But there must be a line artistic Instinct in the person whether male or female who would do such work successfully.

Miniature painting, from its very nature, is restricted. It bears about the same relation to the larger COLONIAL THEATRE CHAS. KICII ft HARRIS, Lessees nrd Mansiror and Russian official society. Secretary Taft probably will be forced to go to Boulogne to catch the steamship President Grant, on which he returns to the United States. The President Grant leaves Hamburg Dec 7 and Boulogne Dec 8.

This will give him a day longer ashore. Mrs Taft, accompanied by Mrs George Post Wtoeeler, wife of the second secretary of the American embassy at To-klo, will go from here to Vienna and Paris. She will return to the United States several weeks after her husband. When questioned regarding the presidential situation In the United States, Sec Taft requested to be excused from expressing any opinion. He said he had announced a year ago his readiness to accept the nomination in case It was given to him, and that his attitude had not changed since.

Rrrors in drawing and color that are scarcely noticeable in miniature work would not be tolerated in larger work; but, inside of Its limitations, very beautiful work is possible by the (enuide miniature artist; and it Is work which is destined to become more and more popular. The greatest danger, however, lies in this very popularity, for, like the old art of crayon portraiture, it will Inevitably attract mediocre people, who will acquire a sort of formula for making miniatures.

The portrait of an old lady by Ella S. Bush is well done. The group of young woman and chid, by Alice Schielle, Is very artistic In pose and treatment.

There are also some very line Utile portraits by Grace formula for flesh tints, for for backgrounds, etc. Such miniaturists are about as much nrtlsts as are the average so-called crayon portrait artists, whose work, when compared with that of the late Samuel Rowse, for instance. Is nothing but the veriest trash. Of course women beautiful women--and children are the best subjects for the miniaturist, although the old man with gray hair and hoard always looks well "In the small."
