The Daily Utah Chronicle, Friday, February 21, 1986 Page Six Pink' lacks reality and tension by Fara Warner Staff writer Once again, director and now producer John Hughes of Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club has brought us another teen film. It stars, once again, Molly Ringwald in the lea role and deals with teen problems that most of us have difficulty relating to. However, in its entirety, Pretty in Pink proves to be good entertainment, if you don't worry about plot development and characterization. Ringwald stars as Andie Walsh, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who falls in love with a boy named Blane McDonough (inadequately played by Andrew McCarthy) from the proverbial right side of the tracks. VChat ensues could be called a plot, but the problem with the film is that the crises don't come off as very important to the whole scheme of life or even the scheme of this film.

Poor girls don't drive Karmann-Ghias, have phone answering machines or expensive silk kimonos hanging on their walls. Andie, who lives so close to the tracks her windows probably rattle, has all these things as well as other gadgets and finery too numerous to mention. A rich guy doesn't run around like a slouch in pants that need hemming or with his shirt tails hanging out. Oh, he does drive a BMW, but does that convey wealth or simply high car payments every month? Apart from the problems of portraying rich and poor, McCarthy and Ringwald lack the needed chemistry when it comes to love scenes. It is hard to imagine these two people together, let alone trying to fight the supposed taboos that assail them from all sides.

However, there are some fine portrayals of characters that deserve mention. Annie Ports plays Iona, a character caught between being a beatnik, a punk and a woman of the '80s. If you liked Annie's "Hello, Ghostbusters" character, you'll love Iona. From her motorcycle outfit and kamikaze boots to a blond geisha girl to the hilarious '60s revival of the bouffant hairdo, Iona exudes kookiness. James Spader is, at times, the saving grace of this film at least he lends it some reality.

He plays a rich snob who has been turned down by Ringwald. He can't see why Blanc, his best friend, would be interested in the "Zoid" (the nickname coined by those not so wealthy). Spader's character, Steff McKee, has a tight-jawed haughty voice that attempts to mask his character's insecurities. Steff builds a wall by being a snobbish, spoiled rich kid who refuses to believe that the girl, especially a Zoid, would reject him. "Steff could have easily become the class clown, instead he chose to be the snob.

His behavior was a manifestation of his personality," Spader said. The character becomes an integral part of the film because he gives depth to the film. His insecurities arc passed on to Blanc and finally some tension occurs. John Cryer, Broadway's "Brighton Beach Memoirs," is supposed be the tension character in the love triangle of himself, Andie and Blanc. But as Ringwald's best friend (who wants to be more than that), he is unable to pull it off.

t- J'JLJ. Centered Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy play star-crossed lovers in the latest John Hughes film. Pretty in Pink opens next week in Salt Lake theatres. There is no denying that Oyer is good as the kooky Duckic Dale, however, his combination of comedy and high school pathos doesn't serve as a good basis for the clash that the audience is waiting for. He does fight Blane, but no one ends up the "winner" and, again, the plot is pacified instead of making the necessary waves.

In the end, all is well, all is pacification. But does getting the girl always mean the guy was worthy of her? You choose. Siding Five days of adventure and change for the experienced skier.
