TODAY'S tiqua Daily Summer Opera Opens Second Week Cincinnati Summer Opera's second week of the 50th anniversary season features operadom's traditionally paired "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "I Pagliacci" on July 15 and 18 and "Samson and Delilah" the familiar and dramatic Biblical story, July 17 and 19. "Cavalleria" or "Rustic Chivalry" stars Edith Lang, leading dramatic soprano of the Hamsburg Opera, in the role of Santuzza, the woman scorned in this hot-blooded tale. Rita De Carlo, a young American mezzo, will make her Cincinnati debut in the role of Lola; Thomas O'Leary debuts here in the key role of Turiddu, the soldier who abandons Santuzza for Lola; Julian Patrick, handsome baritone of the New York City Opera, will sing the role of Alfio; and Caroline James, a Corbett Foundation Opera Singer, will make her debut here as Mama Lucia. "Cavalleria" was one of the earliest of the Italian operas in the "verismo" or "realistic" school. It is a one-act opera by Pietro Mascagni, an obscure, impoverished artist until the 1890 premiere of his opera in Rome when he became famous overnight.

Leoncavallo's "I Pagliacci" is another of the "verismo" operas. It is done in two short acts. Jeff Morris, an American tenor, will sing the role of Canio, the actor whose wife's carefree acceptance of the advances of other men breaks his heart. Portraying the wife, Nedda, in the drama of the touring actors is Lois Crane of the New York City Opera. Miss Crane will be appearing for the first time at the Zoo Pavilion.

She is one of the holders of a Corbett Foundation Opera Fellowship singing a leading role in the Summer Opera season this year.
