to 8 P. M. It's never too late to be sorry and so, after a week we formally express our regret for an error in reporting the deal described in this depart ment last Saturday. Our good friend, who played his hand to get a slam on what appeared on the surface to be less than an ordi narlly good layout, has objected strenuously to the alleged injustice we did him. None, of course, was intended and the resulting error was due to an omission of one trick in the description.

"Harry" didnt skip a trick in the play as we did in reporting it and he figures he has an apology coming. We give it freely and, to introduce a contributor incidentally, call upon Simon E. Miller, df Bellevue Park, to explain what did happen, Readers who may have puzzled over our over sight, will be interested. "You jump from explanation of Trick Four to Trick Six," writes Mr. Miller, "omitting to explain how bidder took Trick Five.

As a matter of fact, played this way the bidder would lose one trick in Diamonds. (North) has three small Diamonds which must be trumped out of Dummy's hand. Instead of leading trumps for fourth trick to catch Spade Jack in West's hand, he should again lead Diamonds, to be trumped by Dummy. Dummy comes back with a Heart, which is trumped by Bidder for the FIFTH TRICK. Bidder again leads Dia monds, taking the fourth and last trump out of Dummy's hand for trick six.

Now then you have the lead in the proper hand for exploit ing the Clubs. It can be surmised by the Bidder that at least one Honor or the King would be in West's hand who had bid no trump. by leading the Queen if i West has more than one Club, and plays low, he can finesse and take the trick with the Queen. However, West would likely even in this case "cover an honor" and play the King, as it happens, it Is the only Club in West's hand and Bidder takes It with the Ace for Trick Seven. "Now Bidder Is free to lead his remaining trump for three tricks, (West's Jack falling on the Ace lead for eighth trick), and then leading UAIUUSDURG CZP TELEGRAPH WEDNESDAY EVENING MARCH 5, 1930 Under the Bridge Lamp Clubs for the last three tricks (hav ing all the high clubs in the two hands from the seven to the For which we are duly grateful to Mr.

Miller and give him the most comfortable armchair, under the bridge lamp. We have other chairs available for innumerable other contributors who will help fill these columns regularly. 'It certainly is hard to reason out how some people bid," writes E. H. R.

"At a game last night my partner bid one Spade and I held four Spades and six Hearts, headed by the Ace King. I bid two Hearts to show her my preference for that suit. Our opponent bid three Diamonds and my partner bid three Hearts, which became the contract. Imagine my surprise when she lay down her hand in which there were only three Heart spots and seven Spades, topped by the Ace King Queen.
