It NEW STARS JOIN CBS WHP ORE PROGRAMS HARRIS8URG TELEGRAPH, Saturday, Juno 2, 1945 1 A Ormandy and Serkin Heard on V7IIP As Philharmonic Opens New Series Rudolf Serkin is soloist in the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 in major, with the New York Philharmonic Symphony conducted by Eugene urmanay, omwdy, (WHP, 3:00 4:30 p. Ormandy, making his first appearance of the summer season as fuest conductor of the orchestra, offers his own transcription of the Handel concerto for Orchestra in major and Haydn's Symphony No. 88 in G. The maior Concerto was really the second that Beethoven composed though it :3 listed as the first in the catalogue of his published works.

He wrote it in 1797 but didn't perform it in public until the following year when he gave its premiere in Jfrague, Thomaschek, a Bohemian composer, who heard him play the work, observed: "Beethoven's magnificent playing and rarticularly the daring flights in his improvisation stirred me strangely to the depths of my soul; indeed I found myself so profoundly bowed down that I did not touch my pianoforte for days." The concerto shows the composer in a state of transition. While Beethoven gives a backward glance at Mozart and Haydn, he also affords a glimpse of the nobility and originality that were to place him in the front ranks of the creative giants of all time. Dr. Philip R. White, of the department of animal and plant pathology of Rockerf eller Institute for Medical Research, is the guest speaker during the Intermission period.
